just resurrecting this thread as i have this problem too! what causes the head to crack? mine isn't over heating, is running fine, but using lots of coolant and white smoke/steam pours out exhaust at tick over once warm!. is there any chance it might be just the gasket? or for water to be getting into the exhaust must it be a cracked head? also if it is cracked and letting water into exhaust port will this be doing any other damage? It's not all bad. Between the old head and the coil springs I replaced as well I'm building a slightly odd looking coffee table!

Just as a warning to others, my 300tdi started smoking like this and, in my infinite wisdom, I decided to take it for a short run in hope that it would clear up... The result was the engine running on its own oil until it eventually went bang and a complete engine rebuild!
![]() The root cause was a dodgy injector that had melted the no.1 piston so I would definitely get your injectors checked if you start to have problems like this! |
