Do you really need two remote fobs ?
Evening all,

Not bothering with the foot ball, got wondering about the defender`s remote key fobs.

The cars previous owner had a Clifford 650 alarm fitted from new and it works ok NO issues with anything electronic, all is well. ( so far ) He used to keep the original fob taped to the bottom of the steering cowl, I suspect if the car goes walkies like this the insurance may be a bit iffy on paying out.
So it`s back on the key ring.

I`am getting a bit fed up with having two key fobs as it looks a bit silly and if you press the wrong one first the alarm goes off,

So I was wondering what bits of the rover plip could be removed and grafted, so to speak into the original key.
Is it just a matter of removing the main transponder chip from the board and graft it into the original standard key.

I have been wondering about this since I saw the post about fitting the metal key section to the remote it`s self.

I suppose there`s a few of us with more than the standard fit anti theift device fitted,
any advice would be nice.

don't think you can remove the chip off the board , the chip on the board still uses small amount of power from fob battery

99% sure on this

it's not like a normal chip you find clipped inside some keys

Yes that's the one thank you, that`s the one that got me thinking.

But it still means I`ve got two remotes which is what I want to get away from.
I have a dislike toward large bunches of keys, I would be happier with one for everything to be honest.

I would like to enclose the chip within the plastic section of the ignition key itself, if you know what I mean
From what munch says the chip may require a power supply of sorts from the plip battery, unlike most transponder chips that are energised / activated via the small current induced via the coil around the ignition barrel.

The rover / lucas seems different, I only have experience of bosch baised systems these can be worked / used with just placing the chip close to the pick up coil, they don`t need to be in the key.

I`am taking the car back to the dealers next week for work warranty to the clutch so hope to speak to a technician and gain a bit of inside knowledge
Failing that the spare fob may get modified. AA on speed dial !! Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

have the extra alarm removed as I think there is a extra bit that can be fitted to standard alarm to improve it and using the one standard fob

or remove extra one and have extra immobiser fitted that just has a transponder hanging on the keys not a buttoned fob

Thanks guys, will look into options you have mentioned.

However on looking at some mg rover web sites it seems I should have a eka / immobiliser code with the car, well I don`t have it, just radio code and mechanical key number. looks like I better sort that one with the supplying dealer tomorrow morning or get it when it goes in.

if you can get the code direct from the vehicle by having it plugged in , as the dealers don't always have the correct code in the paperwork

and try it when you get it !

Replacing key and fob
This forum is great for these sort of questions
The thread is nearly ten years old but I was thinking the same thing, it's really clunky carrying around a seperate fob if you have the older type defender.
I wasn't brave enough to cut up my existing fob and I didn't know about the company called remotekey.co.uk
Took a look at their website and have just ordered a combined key and fob.
If you're not sure what you need, phone the mobile number and speak to them. I didn't get the name of the owner but he is into Land Rovers and I was on the phone for ages talking about all sorts of Landy stuff

There are also low-priced DIY-options for folding keys to plugin your circuit board and a duplicate keyblade.

I have done a lot of research.
Usually the flip-key supplied is an NE75, but LF10 is required. LF10 is available to buy as blanks, but you still have to do some machining to make it fit. My approach is to buy the housing with NE75, integrate the contents of the FOB and adapt my original key so that I can replace it with the NE75. However, the housing will probably have to be glued in place. That's unsightly but actually no problem -- until the next battery change Big Cry
Maybe I can think of something elegant. I'll keep you up to date

That's a flip-key case for the Defender i got from an austrian online key housing shop back 2016 for 12 Eur. (I can send you a link in PM if you want to - i am not related and won't place ads here Wink )

Yes, the pcb does fit in there.

I reinforced the housing with two screws as you can see in the pictures. Works perfectly for me for years now. Thumbs Up
