Diesel in Oil
Checked the oil on my defender today and it was just over full and rather thin considering I changed it 150 miles ago. whenever I change it I always do it to midway on the dipstick, so obviously its rising.
I changed the injector seals about 4,000 miles ago (using the correct tool and genuine seals etc) so my question is -

could the injector seals have gone again/I haven't fitted them correctly?

OR

has the head cracked?

if its the former then I'm to too fussed, if its the latter then I have one hell of a bill coming my way!

there isn't any difference in starting or drivability if that helps in remote diagnosis.

any suggestions much appreciated Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

When you say seals, did you do the copper washers and rubber O rings ?

I guess you cleaned the seats in the head before putting the injectors back ?

I would have thought that if the seals were a problem it would have shown before this.

I had mine done last year along with a new turbo and full oil change. I panicked a bit a few weeks later as the oil level seemed to rise. The smell test on the dipstick did not seem like diesel so I left it for a few weeks, checking the level regularly and it settled down eventually.

Any change in water level or smoke on start up ?

As yours is a 15P engine you 'should' have the metal head locating pins but there does not seem to a definitive answer to what engine numbers onwards these were fitted to.

I would be tempted to pull the injectors again and see if there is any sign to damage to the seals (you will have to fit new ones again) before ripping the head off to get it pressure tested.

If you want it checked out I know a good Indie in Wellington who works on mine.

Could be either.

Cheapest way is to change the seals again. see if it still rises.

PITA, but saves pulling the head off straight away.

I've been thru this, as above change the seals first and if you driving it change the oil often. I was getting 3lts of diesel in the sump every 2weeks.

When you doing the seals again look very closely at cylinder no1 injector seat, as its a know week spot,
I have attached a pic. of what mine looked like. If you open the picture you can see the crack on the right of the port at about 2 o'clock as you look at it.
This head also passed a pressure test... Rolling Eyes

As above, seals replaced ( cheaper option) but unfortunately it turned out to be the head. On the plus side you end up with a very clean internals, down side it costs 2k+ for a new head.

Well the earliest I can re do the injectors is next weekend I'm going to the Peak District in it this weekend, looks like I'll have to take it super steady. Hopefully the zx1 treatment will do something Neutral 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Just be prepared to drain a couple of pints off. I checked mine every 100 mile and i managed 500 mile before draing 4 pints out, at that point it was obvious it was serious.

Cancled the 500 mile trip as it's too much of a risk towing a loaded box trailer. My next question is, if it is the head. Do I buy a new one or have my one repaired? No point in having a second hand one as the history of it will be unknown. Any thoughts? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

IMO Turners rebuild Land Rover engines better than LR built them in the first place.

Just finished my defender, changed all the seals again after very carefully cleaning and inspecting the injector chambers for cracks.

Couldn't see anything with a strong magnifying glass.

Put it all together very carefully and everything was surgically clean. Hopefully that cures it but I'm not holding my breath, if the oil level starts rising now then it's the head for sure Big Cry 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Had same problem on mine a few years ago. Replaced seals didn't sort it. Got a new AMC Head and have had no issues since. I could not see any cracks on the old head when examined
