Maverick output shaft seal - dangerous?

Advice please...

A colleague (female) has noticed oil under her Ford Maverick (for a week!) and I can see its the rear diff output seal. As it's still dripping when the car is standing, it seems there is quite a bit of oil still in there.

It's a week until she can get it fixed. She needs a car as she is alone with a small baby.

Please can anyone give their opinion on what are the chances of catastrophic failure if she continues to drive short trips for a week? Would she get reasonable warning first?

I would check the diff oil level daily and if necessary top up. And stop if you hear strange noises

initially I would say as long as it's kept topped up she should be fine.
Following that, is the seal at the lowest point? I would imagine that there will always be some in the bottom of the diff that will get picked up and flung around.

Finally, once it has stopped dripping I would say that if the oil can get out then crap can get in so be wary of where you drive Russell

The seal is half way up the casing, so as long as it keeps coming out I guess there must be some left in the bottom then

Topping up is a problem as Ford (in their infinite wisdom) have made the plug inaccessible with some fake guard thing

I just checked the car again and no oil has come out when standing cold. I guess it's just when the oil gets warm. Hopefully short trips will be okay

She should be fine, I used to have a 300tdi disco with a leaking shaft seal on the transfer box. It was leaking for at least 3-4 years before the wife parked it in a tree

I never had any problems and the oil was changed every year.

As it's half way up the diff will have entry of oil to coat the crown wheel and then throw oil over the rest of it
