Following on from last years fantastic Summer Weekend we will be running our second Summer Offroad Adventure Weekend based in the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park. The weekend will appeal to anyone wanting to learn more about the capabilities of their 4x4. Over the course of the weekend we will be covering topics such as route finding, orienteering and map work, while combining team-building, off road driving, and Survival skills. We will also be demonstrating and practising various vehicle recovery methods with a hands on demonstration from Goodwinch.
Participants are welcome to arrive at the camp site from Thursday the 17th July, though it is expected that most people would be on site by late Friday evening. The weekends' activities will begin on the Saturday morning with a drive around the immediate area, all on private land, which will involve taking your vehicle on unsurfaced tracks, fields and technical obstructions such as ditches and side slopes. We will be giving tips for driving over difficult terrain and you can expect opportunities to work together to overcome obstacles and to learn about recovery techniques. There will be the option of some driver training should people be interested. The route is designed to be non-damaging and suitable for most 4x4 vehicle and driver capability/combinations. Following lunch, a couple of practical demonstrations will introduce participants to vehicle recovery followed by a Survival Skills talk from BushMechanics.co.uk Hopefully the afternoon sessions will give everyone the chance to develop a healthy appetite as we will be preparing an evening BBQ using local produce (all included) for all participants. Sunday will offer the chance to put the previous days experiences into practice with some challenging tasks around the site. These task will be designed to further your vehicle confidence, improve your orientation skills and possibly practice some self recovery within a group. We will also be conducting some light hearted team building practical sessions. We aim to finish between 3 and 4 pm. The 4x4 Adventures Summer Weekend will take place in the Black Mountains, about 10 miles from Abergavenny and will cost £240 per vehicle assuming 2 adults per vehicle. A summary of the weekend timetable can be found below. As with all our events places will be limited so early booking is advisable. Key elements of the weekend: Team Building – There will be several team building tasks over the course of the weekend. These are designed to get people to know each other and will concentrate on vehicle based tasks. Although these tasks will be designed to be achievable by all without risk of vehicle damage we would like to point out that, like all elements of the weekend, they are obviously optional. Off Road Driving – Over the course of the weekend you can expect to drive some fantastic off road routes. These will be both challenging and awe inspiring with spectacular views of some the fine scenery. The selection of routes chosen will cover a variety of different types of terrain on both private and public lanes/routes/tracks. Bush Mechanics/Survival Skills – Dave Gunning, director and founder of Bush Mechanics, http://www.bushmechanics.co.uk/home will be giving an introductory talk to Survial skills & possible bush mechanic skills over the course of the weekend. Campsite/Other Accomodation – The campsite is designed for overlanders – which means it is isolated with not many ‘comfort features’ but in an idyllic setting; pretty much as you would wish for on an overlanding trip. There will be portaloos provided and a BBQ on the Saturday evening, but you should be self sufficient in all other respects. The campsite is available from Thu 17th through until 1300hrs on Mon 21 Jul 14. If you want some help in deciding what sort of equipment/camping gear you would need for the weekend and any subsequent overland trip, please feel free to contact us. Other accommodation – If the camping side of things does not really appeal there is B&B accommodation available at the Priory, only a few miles away : http://www.llanthonyprioryhotel.co.uk/ or we will be happy to provide details of other options if necessary. Driver Capability/Combinations – The routes have all been carefully prepared and set out by our experienced instructors to ensure they are suitable for most types of 4x4 vehicle regardless of the drivers' off road practical experience. These routes are designed to be non-damaging and will be suitable for vehicles running non-aggressive "all-terrain" type tyres (weather aside!) Practical Vehicle Recovery Demonstrations – There will be several demonstrations over the course of the weekend including some practical hands on elements. David Bowyer from Goodwinch http://www.dborc.co.uk/goodwinch/ will be giving you a hands on winching demonstration. David will also be on hand, along with the rest of us, to offer advice on any element of vehicle recovery throughout the course of the weekend. Evening BBQ – The evening BBQ will be prepared using free range meats from the host and neighbouring farms, cooked over locally produced charcoal. There will be homemade lamb kebabs, pork sausages and beef burgers, as well as a vegetarian option plus a selection of salads made using our own free range eggs and vegetables from the farm garden. To follow you can indulge in a selection of homemade cakes with fresh tea and coffee. Cost £240 - The price will include camping on a private site with toilet facilities, a Drive Round off-road course, all practical’s/demonstrations and seminars, a BBQ on Saturday evening prepared with local produce, team building elements, camping fees and third party liability insurance. Timetable – Thu 17 Jul - Campsite available from 1300hrs. Fri 18 Jul – Individual camp setup Sat 19 Jul –Morning – 0900 Drive Round Route in local area on private land with team building activities. Well, bring on the hottest Welsh summer you can, as I've just found a nice place to stay for the food thieves.
