Does your new caravan have resistive led`s. ( this does depend on how the system is set up )
Modern vehicles that have led lights fitted need resistive leds as the internal resistance of a normal light bulb is a lot higher than a led, so the car may not be able to sense the extra load. I see this problem a lot at work with motorhomes as the owners like to fit led lights, but the vehicles body computer needs to see a resistance value in the circuit so it can. 1. test the circuit. 2. figure out if the bulbs working or not. So if the resistive value is to low the BCM thinks the bulb is blown or there a open circuit in the system. As for the 12s/n cables you can get a special set of leads so it joins it all together might be cheaper than getting it rewired. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires. |

Thanks Martin. Made a few calls locally with widely varying responses from auto electricians, but the most informed response paralleled your comments. The wiring options seem to be taking a 13 core cable back to source on the 110, or splicing the two existing cables into a 13 pin socket. As to detecting the LED indicators the local auto electrics company seem to think they can add something to the circuit which will detect the extra load, if that makes sense. My technical electrical knowledge nil, ax you probably guessed. With more caravans being LED equipped I guess this question will crop up again. Thanks again, Ian One wife - livid

A Defender isn't that advanced to use a BCM lol...
If you don't want to make any wiring mods... You could use one of these: http://www.mobilecentre.co.uk/index.php?ma...1a0040dc44 Also, with regards to converting to a 13 pin socket... Save all the hassle and just fit the geniune kit - LR005919 This will - if wanted - fit into the recess (often refereed to as the PTO hole) on your rear cross-member with the use of 3 riv nuts. Is plug and play... What Defender indicator relay are you running?

Hi Steve
Appears to be the top left one in the main fuse box, marked if I'm reading the mirror image right as ELR HEW and 301 102 31, if that makes sense. Ian One wife - livid |

Is it a standard relay I.e. From the factory or LED biased such as RDX or Wipac? I'm guessing factory standard.
The RDX will let you use the trailer light but you'll need resistors on the trailer / caravan. There's not really another way around that for LED's and trailer light unless you go down fitting a buzzer route which is no longer OE and you will loose the trailer light permanently. Depends what resistance the LED's on the trailer are too, it maybe possible with fine relay adjustment to still get the light to come up. It's something that I'm thinking of exploring myself one day. |

I'll let you know how I get on with it Steve. Response awaited from LR, but will probably need to source a part from Sargent Electrics who supply the caravan electrics
