Jobs, greasing, service
So I'm going to do as full a service as I possibly can to my 110 tomorrow in time for a summer of lots of use hopefully.

Have diff oils, tbox, gbox oils sorted and have done engine oil and filter as well as fuel and air filters recently enough.

What else is worth doing? Hear about 'greasing' things, grease nipples and 'grease' or 'sealed for life' a bit on here too. What should I be doing/looking for while I have the car up on the ramps? It's done 62k miles and could do with some love I'm sure...

Assume I know nothing (and you won't be far off) but I'm fairly keen to have a go at things myself and look after the car for the future...

Also anything else I should be looking out for in particular under there? Other than the usual checking for any oil leaks/damage/excessive corrosion (hopefully not on a 4yo vehicle!)

It's a 2.4 110 and don't mention undersealing as that's a job for another day! (Got the stuff ready)

Cheers folks! Cheers, David

Grease the prop shafts, each universal joint has grease nipple in the middle of it, you may need to move the car back and forth to get at them but it is possible without ramps or jacks. whilst under there check for play in each joint and in transmission components. I would also jack each wheel up in turn (scotch the others) and check for play in wheel bearings, front hubs and suspension, a spade under the wheel can help here, remove each wheel and check brake components, pads, caliper pistons, abs cables, brake pipes, and on the front the swivel joints, track rod ends, shock absorbers etc. why the wheels are off is a good time to spray the dinitrol about locally if its clean, if its not its a good time to clean everything ready for the dinitrol (or other wax) in the near future

good luck DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

Some grease guns are harder (or impossible) to connect onto the grease nipples than others,I bought a cheap Silverline grease gun and it fit's ok with just a bit of waggling. Also make sure the grease gun comes with a solid pipe connection instead of a flexi-pipe as they are not rated to the same pressure and often burst. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Td5 props have 3 nipples per propshaft one for each of the UJ's and one for the extending part of the shaft. I assume Pumas are the same. (should be doing these circa every 3 months).

Also two front swivels, check they are topped up with grease.

If you want to do a proper job greasing the propshafts make sure that you unbolt at least one end of the shaft. This enables you to articulate the joint properly as you grease it, and will also enable you to check the bearings for wear far more effectvely than would otherwise be possible.

If unbolting the prop be aware that the official recommendation is then to use new nyloc nuts due to the nature of the coupling.

I'm sure many don't do this and suffer no ill effects but you did say assume no knowledge.

Ok thanks, are the grease nipples all the same/universal? Don't have a grease gun so would need to get one. Cheers, David

There are many different types of nipple, but the ones on your Landrover will all be the commonest type of push-on nipple, and a bog standard grease gun will fit them.

You can alsways visit somewhere like The Nipple Shop for more information!

Cheers for the tips guys although mine has no nipples at all! From reading it seems to be hard to tell which cars will and won't have them, LR obviously use the 'eenie meenie minie mo' approach to allocation parts...

Did a full service and had a good look around underneath though, all is looking good visually at least. No play in anything and no real rust to speak of Smile

They've been doing eanie meani minie mo for decades...I'm surprised though that modern ones are not all common.
My rear prop had no grease nipples either. I let it get really bad before replacing the whole thing, with the aim of getting new UJs for old one... It's still sitting on a bench waiting... Rolling Eyes 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top
