Towing electrics, second socket
Gentlemen
Got a question about the towing electrics, I have the black socket already, but would like to fit the grey one for my tin tent.
Is there a plug stashed away somewhere that I connect to like the D3 ? Or is it a bit more of a faff than that.......got a feeling what the answer is going to be.
Thanks
Wes

I was told I had to replace the standard socket for a 13 pin. Told it was a major wiring job otherwise. But I was probably conned

No plug, it's not quite as easy as the 12N socket. There is a genuine kit available.

Gents
Just ordered a genuine one for about a hundred quid, seems like a pretty good kit, will keep you updated when it comes to fitting time

Did the 110 a couple of years back, and the 300 tdi Disco just before the Nationals (then wrecked it while setting out RTV the next day Rolling with laughter )

You did not say what fender you have, yes there is a kit for the TD5 but it costs a small fortune, whereas the kits for the Puma are much cheaper and easier to install. As mine is a TD5 I found it significantly cheaper to just buy the bits.

Firstly you will need a relay as this is a split charge circuit for charging the van battery and running the fridge. Nowadays voltage sensing relays are readily available. I bought mine from towshure as previously linked.

There are two main ways, either run a fused battery feed to the rear of the vehicle, and install the relay in the rear of the vehicle. This will also give you easy access to the reversing light wire, there is probably already an available wire there already.

Alternativly (the route I took) was to buy 4m of the grey 7 core and run it directly to your battery box and install the wiring there. As I used a standard relay initially I thought it would be easier to get to the alternator feed wire to ensure the relay only activates when the engine is running. However I ultimatly ended up installing a vlotage sensing relay to drive the main relay as it ultimatly was easier and I did not want to upset my extended warranty. This means that on the 110 I do not supply a reversing light feed.

In the Disco I installed the relay in the rear quarter where there is a reversing light and ignition live feed supplied for the 12S. I still needed to install a battery feed with a 30a fuse in the engine bay.

Oh yes, ensure that you directly earth the black and white whires to the body as they can overload the existing loom earth causing overheating. He who dies with the most toys wins Smile
