DAB radios are already available for vehicles, undoubtedly with a little research and the correct adaptor one would be able to be 'slotted straight in' I would have thought...They seem expensive at the moment too....

If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

There are plenty of DAB head units available now, and loadsore will be coming onto the market in the next couple of years. Yu will need a new antenna though. Its a bit of a modification, but a roof mount DAB/AM/FM antenna that covers all bands will be a worth while investmant.
I switched to DAB way back in 1999 and tested DAB as part of my day job all over the areas of Europe that had addopted the standard at that time. Reception in Noray realy proved the point of DAB. FM was useless due to multipath and increadable swings in signal strength. DAB was rock solid all the way from Kristiansand as far north as Alta, inside the arctic circle. If you like radio than DAB is worth the investment, and as you mention, you will have to convert by 2015 anyway. |

I've got DAB in mine, with a roof mounted antenna - bit patchy though, fortunately it changes automatically to FM when digital signal is lost, then back to DAB. Hope it works better as the digital signal gets boosted!
Great when it does work though - with the track names & other info displayed. |

Ads90 - how did you go about changing the aerial in your truck, and which headunit did you go with? Any chance of a pic or two?
I am dead keen on this mod to the 110. The FL2 we recently had as a courtesy car had a DAB radio in and it worked brilliantly. We swear by DAB at home and would like to have it in the cars. |

Hi Seb - the previous owner had it fitted, the normal LR (analogue) antenna is still in place (and used for the FM coaxial), the DAB antenna is roof mounted, central in front of the sunroof, and is a short bee-sting type thing (a bit like a car-phone antenna, remember them?). I don't know the make of this.
The cable runs hidden down the side of windscreen and behind the dash to a small DAB Tuner box (JVC KT-DB1000), which in turn plugs into the head unit. The head unit is a JVC KD-BT1, not a particularly expensive item I don't think, but does the job well (also has bluetooth to pair with your phone). Also plugged in the back is a USB socket (on a wire) and an iPod adaptor box (KS-PD100). I have put a cheap USB memory stick behind the dash (behind the small inspection panel on the passenger side) with about 80hrs of tunes on - lives there permanently - I just take it out to reload new mp3s, this works well and saves you worrying about leaving an iPod in there... Like I said - the DAB performance is ok, but could be better (I haven't been able to pick up 6music for example, which i like - gutted if it gets shut down!). R1, 2 etc are about 80% coverage. How much of this is due to the install though is unknown, as I haven't got another car with it on to compare... I don't have a photo-share account anywhere, but can email you picks if you want? You can google the JVC parts - I'm sure the head unit will be superseded by now though... The other bits are still current SFAIK. PS. If you or anyone else reading this has a compatible JVC head unit, I have a brand-new boxed iPod adapter (KS-PD100) surplus to use if anyone's interested. |

Ah yes - thanks Sonic, hadn't appreciated you can upload direct...
I've added a pic to my gallery that shows the roof antenna - just a side view of the truck, but you can see it, er... on the roof. |

It wont happen in Europe, the business model just doesn't work, we are already used to good quality radio stations, something the commercial model in the US has not been able to deliver until subscription services like Sirrus and its competitor XM which has been bought by Sirrus now. There is a satellite operator proposed for Europe called ONDAS, based in Spain, but frankly it isn't going to happen. They don't have a viable business model and the satellite is not likely to be ready any time soon. DAB/DAB+/DMB is the way to go. The technology is here, now ,and at last its being taken seriously by all European nations (it will be the mandatory in France in late 2013 and UK in 2015) . |
