England 2002 Defender 110 Td5 SW Coniston Green
Tonight whilst the boy was out at Scouts and it was a pleasant evening I decided to see why one of the speakers wasn't working in the back. I had been given some fancy posh speakers and tweeters some time ago and thought while I'm at it I'll swop them around. After pulling all the wiring out from under the headlining and all the way through to the centre console it turned out that the radio itself was at fault. I can't even get a speaker to work if I poke the wires into the plug on the radio so it looks like there will have to be a replacement one of the days in the future. For now I joined two speakers together, the head unit is nothing special, bought for Ł30 four years ago and there's not much of a future for it anyway as it has other issues like spitting cds out when it feels like it even when ignition power is off.

Well today I set about wiring in the three unused Carling switches in the Mud Stuff dash pod.
Hazard, Demist and Rear fog.

Hazard went OK, Demist went OK but the fog one gave me trouble.
All wired in and thought job done. Two wires on the fog switch and off we go.
Turns out that to get the fog to work properly, I had to switch on, (light came on) switch off(light stayed on as did the warning light on the dash). Mmmm odd.
Using the sequence, on off on off the light would go out. Turns out two issues.

1. Following the wrong wiring diagram (I was following the demist one)
2. Wrong set of pins on the switch aka wrong switch.

I had a off - on but need a off - mom switch!

Also burnt my hand a little with a soldering iron.

Conclusions;
Buy the right switch (which saves the head scratching of WTF is going on.
Follow the right wiring diagram
Don't try and solder your hand!

So will have to order another Carling switch!

Got the wire from VWP and matched the wires to the colours of the loom. 1999 Defender TD5 110

John- My fog is wired into an Off-On Carling switch! The problem I had before is that the original is an "Off Biased" switch, so it always resides in the off position (does that make sense?). An engine to TDi for!
