We were driving home today, and an annoying rattle developed in the vicinity of the panel underneath the rear left hand side window, behind the passenger seat. It actually sounded like a loose piece of tin or something like that hitting against metal...very annoying. You could bang on the outside of the vehicle below the window, & you'd hear it & also bang the plastic trim below the window on the inside, & hear it again. Anyway, when we got home, I did a bit of "fossicking" & found this little bolt with a washer attached, sitting inside the plastic trim, near where the bulkhead is bolted. The bolt rotates in the washer but will not detach from it. There is an image of it in the link I've posted. The washer is 20mm & the bolt is 10mm (both approx). Any ideas what has caused this rattle,or what this bolt/washer is from? Thanks, Pickles. |

Can't see your photo but I'd hazard a guess that it could be one of the hardtop bracket bolts. Only way to be sure is to remove the window trim and find out. Steve.

Pickles, the link you posted needs a Photobucket logon which many don't have - probably why you haven't had the huge response you were expecting!

Sorry guys, as I've said before, I'm computer useless, I will speak to wifey, & see if we can sort something out.
We've used photobucket for putting up images before, and it's worked out ok? Sorry for the inconvenience. Alternatively, even without an image, this is a pretty unusual fitting,....a 20mm washer with a 10mm bolt attached to it that rotates in the washer, but cannot be removed. I just thought someone might have seen one, & on the basis I narrowed the area where it came from could say, Yes, I've seen them,..this is what they do? Thanks, Pickles. |

Pickles, your truck is still new. Should get the dealer to sort it out under warranty.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

G'Day Eric, Yes, I'm aware of that, but I don't want someone fossicking around in Gracie unless it's entirely necessary,..sometimes more harm than good is done. I do have a bit of warranty stuff to be done,...the brake master cylinder reservoir reservoir has a small crack in it, so I'll want that replaced, & the handbrake warning light function is erratic,...its a sticking switch, you can squeeze the bottom of the handbrake lever & it'll go on & off as it should. All relatively small stuff, so I'll probably wait for its 1st service in November, unless anything serious crops up.
Actually, I'm more interested at the moment in finding out what this bolt/washer is actually used for. I would've thought that a 20mm washer with a non removable rotating 10mm bolt attached, would be pretty unusual,..so I was hoping someone would know what it was? Anyway, whilst I'm not having much success at putting up images, I'll send an image by email, & then see if this "part" can be recognized! Thanks, Pickles. |

So, you found this washer / bolt type item in your car too?...Where did you "find" yours?
Thanks, Pickles. |

I found them in the plastic surrounds of the rear windows when I removed the rear seats and belts
Might be wise to check all over the car, I also found loose ones under the front seatbox when doung some wiring Garry |

Thanks Chris. There's no way it's anything to do with me!!! I found this, as described in my original advice, sitting in the plastic trim area, where there is a gap for the bulk head bar. It must have been "rattling around" in there, at least I hope it was, because now that I've removed it, my rattle appears to have gone...hopefully.
I just thought some of you Defender experts might have been familiar with it, because I don't think it's just any old fitting,....it's a 20mm washer with a non removable 10mm bolt that moves within it,...it would have to be engineered for something? Pickles. |

I had the same in my '12 90.......... on both sides........... If you take off the plastic trim around the windows you will see (from memory) it's for the bracket half way along the tub that holds the roof and side panels to the top edge of the tub. Mine actually had the 2 bolts rattling around in there but no nuts/washers on them. Obviously the lazy at Solihull don't like putting the bolt/nut in this location as it is a bit of a fiddle
I just fitted some nuts and washers myself......easy job. Mick Last edited by Cracka on 23rd May 2014 11:47am. Edited 2 times in total |
