The tread or sidewall protrudes?
I'm running 285's BFG AT's on 0mm offset 8j rims and the sidewalls protrude about an inch, but when viewed from above, the tread is covered and not had a single problem with Police or MOT Keith |

Depends on perspective. Do they stick out an inch above the top of the arches or just at the tapered ends? Had no mither with mine at all. MOT not an issue. Have a look in my gallery. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Hi, its at least an inch, the tread is at least an inch so maybe the total is more like 2 or 2 and a half inches. I have 265 tyres on Black steel modulars. I like the look and dont want to fit arch extensions unless I have to. Just wondering if I will get away with it. 110 Hardtop

If you yourself are wondering maybe that answers your question? Run it by your local MOT/Dealership they'll put you right. Mine refused to roadtest mine due to their spin on the legality but mine don't protrude at the top of the arch. Tread protrusion isn't acceptable apparently, sidewall is. I'm a bit baffled how you can get a 265 to stick out 2" past the wheel arches?
0mm offset modulars and 30mm spacers?? Do you have any photos? |

As a rule of thumb any protrusion beyond the arches is meant to be a no go.
Looking down directly from above to the floor, think plumb bob kinda idea. If it's marginally out it probably won't be noticed. |

To find out how legal you are ................ All you need to do is drive past a revenue officer who has spent most of his shift sitting in a layby eating donuts and hasn't hit his daily target for issuing fixed penalty tickets .......

Hello pob1968
I looked into this when buying my 90 as it has been fitted with 275 60R20 Cooper Zeon LTZ tyres on Land Rover LRX wheels and they project beyond the wheel arches. Click image to enlarge 90 Wheel Arch I checked with VOSA and even tried the DVLA , it was not a clear story eventually I went with the 90 to my MOT station and got one interpretation of the rules. The on-line info I found also just didn't make it clear. I was told at the MOT station, (but don't know for sure that this is correct) that the tread pattern on the part of the tyre that makes contact with the road, must not project more than 30mm from the TDC (top dead centre) of the wheel arch. The side wall will project more than the tread pattern and doesn't count. The tread pattern that partially goes round onto the side wall doesn't count. I looked into this question thinking that any projection beyond any bodywork was not allowed. The 90 passed its 1st MOT (not at the MOT station I attended) with exactly the arrangement you see here. The wheels are fitted on spacers that also give the 120mm stud PCD. It would be possible to reduce these spacers (or replace them) to take the wheel further inboard, the wheel itself has an ET50 offset spacing. Click image to enlarge 20" LRX Wheels Someone on here may be able to add to this...but currently I think I am legal Another Option... I have managed to import from Canada a set of reinforced rubber 1.25 inch Pacer wheel arch extensions that are being assessed currently (I am edging towards fitting them ) as any tyre protrusion will cover the side of your Defender with what ever you drive through, I live a little off the beaten track so its currently not ideal. If you are significantly beyond the wheel arches, I would say you may have an issue. SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html Last edited by X4SKP on 15th May 2014 8:56am. If you do get pulled, and they decide to rule against you, that's 3 points per corner, so bye bye licence. Or worse still you have an accident, the police confiscate your vehicle due to the tyres and your insurance will then walk away!

Why would you get three points per corner? As long as the tyres are legal (tread depth / damage/ load rating / speed rating etc) there isn't a problem with the tyres at all.
You can't get points for defective wheel arches unless they're sharpened to razors and likely to cause injury to a pedestrian! Keith |
