Dubai - how to run RHD?
I am looking to move to Dubai, but not without my landrover. I am told you cannot register a RHD vehicle there, and I don't want to convert to LHD if at all avoidable. Any ideas?

a) are there any loopholes to get RHD vehicle registered / register in a different emirate / pay a 'fee' ?
b) is it possible to run on UK registration, for how long ?

Presumably globe-travellers are often away for more than a year without going back for an MoT, but how long can one stay in any one country? If anyone has experience in the UAE or elsewhere, or any other suggestions, that would be appreciated.

Hay there angus, I reside in Dubai and you are correct you can't register a RHD vehicle here. The problem there is lack of information regarding importing cars into the country. Here we have the RTA (Road and Transport Authority) similar to the DVLA in the UK who handle these issues but there is a catch, Dubai police have to be involved in the procedure too.

Now regarding registering in a different emirate, that has come to a total halt due to the number of accidents involving young local drivers back in late 80's to early 2000 where they were driving RHD nissan skylines, toyota supras etc, you get the picture. My dad imported his ferrari testarossa back in '92 to dubai from london and got it registered in the emirate of Umm Al Quwain (UAQ), part of the northern emirates territory. But beginning 2001, tasjeel (equivalent of MOT in UK) did not register the car because of it being RHD. So now my dad stored the car for 9 years and he is sending back to the UK sometime this year.

Unfortunately there are no loopholes and there is no such type of fees for RHD vehicles. Whereas LHD vehicles if you import them into Dubai there is a 5% duty on the value of the car you pay to customs and then all necessary payments to shipping company and handlers and then you take it to tasjeel to get dubai plates placed on and sort out the insurance before you register the car with RTA.

Now regarding running on UK plates I'm sure it is possible because I have seen French plates and American plate cars in dubai a few times on the road but mostly neighboring countries such as Oman, Bahrain, Jordan, KSA, Qatar etc. But I feel the car being RHD might be an problem.

I spent my entire life in this country was born and raised here but twice a year I live in the UK, London where i have a house too and I still can't speak arabic and I have no intention of learning. But when you go to these government departments speaking english can be a problem because some of the arabs do understand english but don't want to speak with you unless you speak arabic, they are a bunch of arseholes. You do get the odd arab (emirati) who speaks english and is very helpful then its your lucky day. Laughing

Anyways I will be going to the traffic dept. on sunday (weekends friday and saturday) because I'm planning to import a 1985 Land rover series 3 to dubai but LHD. Need to find out what paper work I need and the procedures. I ll have a word again regarding RHD vehicles.

Need any help you are more than welcome. Thumbs Up '08 LR Defender 110

Thanks lrdxb110 - I can imagine officaldom is not the easiest to deal with there.

Does anyone have any experience with running on UK plates for extended time? I have no problem with leaving the country every few months, if it is feasible to roll over into a new grace period for running of foreign registration every time I re-enter the country...?
