I hope BP can 'pull the proverbial rabbit from the hat' on this one. Their reputation according to the BBC News this morning is in tatters and future oil exploration looks in serious jeopardy. (Can't be that bad as share prices showed a 3% increase of late). The following is an extract from the Telegraph from less than an hour ago.....
President Barack Obama will extend a moratorium on deepwater oil drilling for six months while a commission studies the reasons for the Gulf of Mexico spill, a White House aide has said. "While the commission performs its work to determine how to prevent this from ever happening again, the moratorium on permits to drill new deepwater wells will continue for a period of six months," the aide said on Thursday. Ken Salazar, the interior secretary, briefed Mr Obama and his advisers about the contents of a report on the spill and the deadly blast aboard the Deepwater Horizon rig, which was leased by BP, on Wednesday night, the aide said. The announcement came as BP faced a pivotal day in its five-week Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster, when its latest attempt to seal a gushing well deep under water would be deemed either a success or a failure. The spill is on course to be the worst in US history. Mr Obama has come under increasing pressure from lawmakers and residents of the oil-stained coast to take over the disaster response if BP's latest tactic to plug the spewing oil - known as a top kill - fails. As fears grew over the extent of the damage, Mr Obama was also expected on Thursday to announce delays or cancellations of planned exploration. Exploration off the coast of Alaska in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas will be put off pending the presidential commission's review, while an August lease sale in the Western Gulf will be cancelled, the White House aide said. "The lease sale off the coast of Virginia will also be canceled due to environmental concerns and concerns raised by the Defense Department," he said. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |
