110 roof rack : Patriot?
Hello everybody!
I'm planning to take a roof rack for my 110 sw to put my Maggiolina roof tent and some others things.

I have a problem with height, because my garage is a little bit taller then the 110, therefore I must take a rack with low profile.

I like Patriot roof rack, 2,8 m full lenght, does someone knows the exactly height from the gutter to the top plan of this rack?

Second, I have some problems with the weight because only the Maggiolina Medium is aproximately 70 kg, a Patriot rack how heavy is?

Finally where is the best place where to take it??

Patriots are not cheap, I'ld like to find a 2nd hand but it's not so easy.... Sad Matteo

Hi Bomber,

Just measured mine, 280mm from the top of the gutter to the top of the rack Thumbs Up.
The full rack is a heavy piece of kit, approx 70 kilos and needs a couple of people to put it on.

I bought mine from Patriot direct, as you say not cheap but bomb proof and the weight is distributed very well.

If weight is an issue look at hannibal or Frontrunner as an alternative, i think the frontrunner sits a bit closer to the roof as well.

Thanks Discocuzzy! Thumbs Up

Damn....70 kg (Maggiolina) + 70 kg (Patriot) = 140 kg.....only with those two I overtook the max weight for the roof of my 110 (LR declare max 130 kg...)

About Hannibal racks, the height from the gutter is 295 mm, so little bit more than Patriot!!

How much you payed the rack directly from Patriot? Matteo

Hello,

just a thought but why not spend the rack money on an external cage and mount the maggiolina to that this is what I have just finished and it's worked out great and the bottom of the maggiolina is just 30mm from the roof so with my maggiolina safari medium which is quoted as 60kg bythe way has only added 330mm to the overall height. I too still have a height issuewhich I have temporarily fixed by reducing the rear tyre pressures to 7 psi. More info and pictures at the weekend when I get access to a computer and not the gf's iPhone.

Declared interest here We sell Patriot Roofracks and the Autohome/Maggiolina rooftents amongst other gear.

The Autohome/Maggiolina rooftents do not have to be mounted on a roof rack but can be mounted on 2 (in my opinion 3 is better) roof bars. There are many different roof bar manufacturers out there. Make sure you get heavy duty roof bars. The Rhino-rack bars from Australia are an excellent heavy duty roof bar..

The inverted U bolts used by Autohome/Maggiolina roof tents will fit most roof bars.

If using a Patriot roof rack you may have to drill the slats to take the U bolts. There may be a need to space out the U bolts if the threaded section is not long enough. Or alternatively use 6mm coach bolts with 'shaved' heads or 6 mm bolts.

Dependent on the roof tent and the catches associated with it then that determines position of the tent on the rack. For instance the Airtop roof tent needs to be at the front of a Patriot rack as the slats makes the release of the front catches awkward. The Grand Tourer can be positioned anywhere whereas the Columbus Variant tent is best positioned at the rear.

Here is the picture.

As suggested by Leeds 3 bars are recommended for off road travel.

there's a hannibal 110 rack on the bay now, i'd go for a rack that is light but strong - what's the point in having a rack that you could use as a bridge if you can't put the load on it anyway? as was previously said putting a tent on top of the patriot already takes it over the reccomended limit, so nothing else can be put up there, may as well get 3 roof bars and save yourself a grand.

if you do get bored with a patriot rack you can always weigh it in, think you'd get £1K as scrap value Rolling Eyes Laughing

Thanks all for replay.
i'va already 3 roof bars, aluminium made, very solid and light.
This is the lightest solution of course, but in this way I cannot use the remaining part of the roof in front of the tent.

This is my actually solution.

Unless you buy a roofrack designed for a 90 single cab, as advertised in the mags. You would fit both on in that case.

Thumbs Up

i used a Patriot rack (from OEC) with a maggi plus MSS rear store box, ladder and Hilift on mine for a 2week 3.6k mile jaunt to Morocco last week. No problems with the setup. It was all fautless. Front runner do good racks to but dont the slats go the other way? Cheers

Ditto,, My rack is now 6 years old,, and bar for the dulled look, as well screwed together as when it was new,,
Had a fair bit of abuse as well, 3 over land trips, numerous trips loaded up with rally tyres etc,,

With a small Maggi, bolt it to the rack, offset to one side, and access is via the rear ladder and wall along the side, never bother with a side ladder !! front catches over the front end, and the rear fits between the rails, no problem
