the pic is of a 80 inch so how can it be a 1956 didn't 80 inch stop in 54

I suspect the "300 left" probably relates to 80" vehicles. Which would be about right. If there really were thousands upon thousands of old Land Rovers out there you would have to ask why they are not seen every day and why the shows are not full of thousands of them. I could well believe that at the present time there are less then ten thousand series Land Rovers on the road in the UK. 2011 110 USW
