United Kingdom 1999 Defender 90 Td5 HT Woodcote Green
Td5 crankshaft pulley
Hi car has developed the marble rattle indicating that the crankshaft pulley is on way out. Wanted advice as to consequences of carrying on with trip to Pyrenees with it rattling? And doing replacement later on?

Or is it a must do job?

I would change asap...

I also have a tool to lock the pulley if you want to borrow it.

Genuine is definitely the way forward - well OEM spec as you can not buy them from Land Rover any more - have been removed from service.

I 'might' have a used one - will check.

Ok a bit of an update,

Had a closer look tonight at the rattle.

Removed fan and examined the crank pulley. Initially looking for play by holding in both hands and trying to move it up and down and side to side. I could not find any play. Put socket on big nut at centre of pulley and moved it back and forth quickly and all was solid with no play or knocking Very Happy

I ran the engine and viewed the pulley from above and expected to see a blur as the pulley vibrated from side to side, but it looked fine. BUT still could hear rattling noise.

I then removed the belt and ran the engine, no rattling noise Confused

So I think the pulley itself is ok, and now need to locate the offending item.

I will have another look at the weekend but has anybody had any experience of a rattling noise being made by any of the pulleys or items that the belt turns? My first thought was the belt tensioner? I spun it by hand and it did not make any awful noises, I did the same with the the other pulleys but could not detect the source of the rattle Rolling Eyes

Grab hold of the ribbed bit that the polyvee belt runs on on the crank pulley and see if that rotates separate to the crank pulley itself it that makes any sense. From the description you're giving I'm 99% certain your crank pulley is toast sorry

Another update,

Dug a little deeper tonight, removed damper and it was clear to see that it has had it Big Cry

I made a tool out of some scrap steel and bolted it to the pulley to stop it moving. Then set about trying to remove the bolt and my god despite using the biggest bar in the world ( about 5 foot) I could not shift it.

Got to stage where I worried about damaging something or myself Shocked

So I admit defeat, I will get local Indi to to it and let them have the pleasure.

The other issue is that even if I did get it off my torque wrench only goes up to 300nm to I could not accurately torque it up.
