It actually seems to work quite well with not much build up of traffic

There is a similar traffic management scheme in place in the village of Poynton in Cheshire, not far from me. Its called a equal priority system, where all users have equal priority, including pedestrians. Its on the busy A523 and A5102 junction. It used to be traffic lights, but now is a block paved expanse, which seems to work pretty well.

The only thing I don't like is when I am riding my bike through the village. I am playing 'equal rights' with 44 tons artics! 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV
