Glad I have still not placed my order then! Whistle

Could not get anything out of dealer (not sure they would know at this stage) on engine change to EU5.

Higgers - you can order an MY11 with commercial change for all models now, July build for Aug delivery - according to two dealers I spoke to who both said the same.

"better" engine in the economy and emissions sense would be a big plus for me... Disco 3 gone but the memory of the bills remain...

I can confirm that Ford's engine tuning group (Ricardo's in Shoreham) have had the 2.2 for months on a Defender test bed.

I am told it is a 'highly strung' engine but very little difference between the existing unit in terms of output.

They have all the same problems making it fit for purpose, many of the engine sensors in the standard engine have to be moved. Apparently they sucked water through them when the engine was hot and then submerged in cold water.

Seeing as the 2.2 is effectively the same engine as the 2.4 you would have thought there is no great difficulty in 'Land-Roverising' it. i.e. the 2.4 is either a larger bore, or longer throw crank than the 2.2 (but otherwise the same), therefore if you're building 'Land-Roverised' 2.4 engines you can simply produce a 2.2 version instead with no need to redesign the wheel.

Will Ford be rationalising the 2.2 across their whole fleet in place of the 2.4 then? Would make sense if its up to the job.

The Italian chap on this forum suggested Ford were dropping the 2.5 TDCi (VM based) unit in the Ranger for a 2.4 TDCi (Puma), which seems to lie slightly uneasy with LR dropping the 2.4 in favour of the 2.2.

Anyway, I've got my 2.4 and short of a disaster will not be changing anytime soon Wink

They need an EU5 engine by Jan 2012 due to the new legislation they used to re-classify them all as commercial, I can't see them waiting until the last minute so would expect it to come at least next year at the latest.

Dealer seemed to think Defender did not have long to live, but with new one coming in 2014 according to the popular press, I can't see them not spending the small amount required to update engine spec rather than loosing the large amount to just stop selling them. I know they cost more to build as they are hand assembled, but I am pretty sure with the premium brand pricing they do good profit Wink

I too would have thought you just take all the 2.4 mods they did and stick them on the 2.2. Can't see power being up much, can see emissions and consumption being better though. Disco 3 gone but the memory of the bills remain...

Not sure I'd want one where they just bolt on the 2.4 amends. After all, they've hardly got that one right yet Shocked

Maybe it has a lot less torque so its the long term solution to the long term clutch issues? Rolling with laughter Disco 3 gone but the memory of the bills remain...

2.2 ltr - you heard it hear first ! - well I think you did.

anyway not sure what difference it makes but apparently LR got Ford to change the orientation of the turbo to suit the Defender better with the 2.2 ltr unlike the 2.4?

Out of interest, what is wrong with the orientation of the turbo on the 2.4?

Thanks Harvey
