Front diff pinion seal variations
Recently I changed the oil in the front diff and have since noticed the oil leaking from the bottom of the pinion seal & down onto the metal 'L' bracket. The diff took exactly 1.7l.

I had noticed it a while ago if I'm honest but now I need to fix the leak, then I'm 100% leak free. For now anayway Laughing

There appear to be two variations in the seal, one that is flat and one that has an outer lip on it - can anyone advise me which is the correct seal for a 2007 110 commercial?

Also, will the breather pipe be located at the top of the diff & simply pull out? I've noticed a few posts around the topic of breather pipes, but after searching could not find the above question answered on the seal types.

Any advice?

The breather iirc you push it in and then it comes out.
I did it myself last year but can't quite remember how now. Neutral

I believe that the seals are interchangeable.

I got through several a couple of years ago trying to stop a persistent slow leak from my front diff and certainly tried both types without any trouble (and without any success). Eventually I changed the flange as well (even though the one that came off was new) and that made no difference. Both these were "quality" aftermarket (definitely not Britpart) parts.

In the end the leak only stopped when I fitted the latest type (long shank) flange from Genuine Parts with the latest pattern seal. Careful measurement of the two aftermarket flanges shows that both are actually out of round by several thou, quite enough to prevent the seal from doing its job. The genuine flange was round!

I think that the breather pipe (located at the top of the axle tube towards the n/s spring mount) just pulls out from the axle. I periodically pop these off to check that the hole in the axle is clear and the pipe is clear, but (like Custom90Steve above) can't remember specifically how they come off! Fiddle with it and it'll come off in your hand!

Incidentally, if you fit a new seal and possibly flange, if the flange won't simply slide back onto the pinion spline (and it should be a snug fit), do not push too hard or tap it with anything. If you do, you tend to drive the pinion forward into the crownwheel, which isn't good, but also as the pinion moves it becomes sloppy on its taper-roller bearings and the alignment of the pinion in the housing is lost. This means that there is a risk of damaging the seal as the flange slides through it. A much better is to use a length of ISO M12 studding and a large washer to pull the flange onto the splines.

I think it won't just pull out but it's like a lock mech, push it down then up and it will come out.
It will not just pull out.

Removed the old seal yesterday & replaced with the sort that has the outer 'lip' - the only part I struggled with was removing the flange without a flange removal tool. There was some sort of adhesive left on the inside of the flange that made removing it a bit tough. I cleaned this off and the flange slid back down the pinion spline with ease, followed up with drawing it in with the nut, (coated with some thread lock) & washer.

New seal in, flange back on and there is now no play where the seal & flange sit in the housing, which previously had rather a lot of movement in!

Just need to give it a test drive now to make sure nothing is a miss!

Re. the breather pipe - this pushed in then pulled out when I checked for blockage.

Just a note to others contemplating doing this job check that your breathers are not blocked as i replaced my rear diff pinion seal on a previous Defender twice before i worked out that the breather was blocked causing a build up of pressure as the oil warmed up and forced it past the seal Big Cry 2005 Td5 90 XS
