No, MTF 94 only, according to nearly everyone including Ashcrofts and Landrover. Some say ATF gives a smoother change but MTF gives better protection, you'll struggle to find anyone (sane, lol)who recommends 75w-80/90. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Thanks for replies.
I have tried to find Texaco MTF94 but have been unsuccessful.
Smith and Allan have a MTF 94 which is about £20 for 5 litres...anyone used this?

I get mine from a Landrover dealer, R380's can get seriously upset with the wrong oil,why risk it?? Think about £8 a liter. A meter of plastic pipe from B&Q a smallish plastic funnel (couple of quid all in) you can fill the gearbox up from the back of the engine bay Thumbs Up . Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

TBH I never thought about buying from LR direct as I thought that I could source elsewhere but that is sound advice JImbob7.

Have finally decided on the oils and service items for my td5.

engine oil- Castro magnatec 5w-30 a1 £44 (8 litres)
filters etc- Duckworth (LR) service kit £68
Main gearbox- LR mtf 94 £37.98 (5 litres)
Transfer gearbox- Castrol universal 75w-90 £29.96 (3 litres)
Axle- Castrol EPX 80w-90 £23.97 (3 litres)

approx. Total £204

compared to LR I think this is a good price and it uses recommended service items!!

Ouch Shocked, but yeah, DIY every time Thumbs Up .
Don't forget to grease the prop shafts,I bought el'cheapo Silverline grease gun off Amazon, which fits on the nipples with a bit of wiggling (some don't). Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

I know what you mean about the nipples Wink , but have bought a flexible end to the grease gun which works a treat.
As for the cost, I was paying a fair bit more to keep the trooper serviced and it did not include all the gear oils!
Do the main gearbox, transfer box and axles need doing every year?
If no then there will be a saving next year on those items.
The other issue for me is that I will use recommended LR oils / filters etc which as I will service the defender myself will hopefully keep the value good as ill staple the receipts into the service book.

Yeah, only engine oil and spinner filter need changing every year,I could be wrong, but I think gearbox/t-box axle's, officially only need doing every 70k,i ain't lettin mine go that long without a change tho.
Be careful usin flexi-pipe on the grease gun, they're not rated to anywhere near the same pressure as the solid pipe and often split in use, usually coz the uj seals are bunged up wi cr*p and need plenty'o'pressure to clear it. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.
