Here's a question for the Td5 gurus
I've been out and about laning today and my 2002 Td5 has been taking some unofficial rest stops. The symptoms are that it starts off with a misfire, black/blue smoke then it will chronically misfire and just die.
I have been able to restart after a little bit of work, it is oil in the injector loom as I've had the rocker cover off and found quite a lot of oil from the injector plugs and the plug socket at the end of the injector loom. Give that a good washout with electrical contact cleaner and I can start after a purge sequence but there is a hell of a lot of diesel present in the pistons/exhaust, you can smell it and it almost gave the impression of a hydraulicked engine the first time I tried to crank to start. That would be diesel being injected but the injector not receiving a "fire" signal.
I know and have a new injector harness on order but, here's the strange thing, the symptoms only come to a head when going uphill. I've had the Nanocom plugged in and the coolant temperature has been running around 80 to 85'C and doesn't rise much before a misfire occours but as said above the misfire only happens uphill. On the flat and mild uphill slopes it will behave normally and accelerate as normal, the boost pressure can be the same as when driving on the flat. I am 100% certain as it is down to oil in the loom but what is perplexing me is it only happening when going uphill. I'd expect it to do it say when under load pulling away from a junction and getting up to the normal road speed but as long as it is flat or even a slight upward incline it behaves itself.
I am not aware of any mechanical influence that an uphill slope can have on the engine and its running smoothly Confused

Has anyone any bright thoughts on what may be influencing the problem I have with my motor?

deisel in the piston could be injector seal. sure it quite common on the td5! but don't quote me Very Happy My 109 thread

Or a cracked fuel rail in the head (is it an early 10P engine?) leaking fuel in

Although why the uphill bit though, don't know.

@JWL surely if the injector does,nt get a signal then it won,t open and let fuel in so i don,t think you would get excess fuel in that way.

I would be looking more at injector seals myself.

We had a Disco Td5 at work that would run for 15 minutes then splutter to a stop and restart after purge sequence and do the same again, that was injector seals and washers letting in air to the fuel system.

The uphill bit as abit of a mystery though Confused 2005 Td5 90 XS

I've not long replaced the injector seals and washers, I'm confident with them as there is no telltale whiff of diesel when I've taken the oil cap off or when the top cover is off and no sign of any in the sump. It is a 15P engine in a 2002 110. Every injector plug socket has evidence of oil in them and the plug on the front has oil in it. On a trial run up a longish hill the problem starts by a loss of power and black smoke reeking of diesel as it then starts to misfire and ending up running on a couple of cylinders, get over the hill and on the overrun all gets back to normal. I tried a steeper hill and just about had enough momentum to get over it as the engine died. As we rolled down the other side I let the clutch out and felt with the throttle whether it had caught by whether it accelerated away downhill, second time it worked and off we went with no more problems. When I was doing the bump starts I had left the ignition alone so even though the engine had stopped it restarted without any restart sequence from the ignition switch.
Hopefully the injector harness will come tomorrow and that will sort it. I am so perplexed that the problem only happens on uphill bits, living this close to Wales I have to plan my routes!

It's not pump related is it ?

Does how much fuel you have make any difference ?

I know that I have to change the harness but it's not here yet. I am just curious as to why gradient is making a difference.

You need jest Ozzy, it was getting close to that yesterday. Trouble was, leading some others out greenlaning they were too busy gawping at the countryside than what was going on in front half of the time. Twice we lost over half of them! Not bad seeing there were five of us out, the first split happened 100yards from the meeting point!

The update today is a new injector harness fitted, seems to be OK, haven't had a chance to do a decent ascent yet, find that out in the morning.
Downside was the quality of the Bearmach part, very disappointed at the quality. Given the major fault of this part I was shocked to see uninsulated crimped terminals visible through the top of the plugs to the injectors. Makes me think about stripping out my old one and rebuilding it, soldering the terminals and plenty of resin. Can't be any worse than what I've put on today.

Thats what i've done, i bought a new injector loom and installed it, I have now stripped my old one and hung all the components to get all excess oils out over a couple months, then dropped all of it in a tub of brake cleaner, once dry i bought Ultra RTV and injected it into every cable end and slowly built it up until the only thing visible on the plugs are the terminals. Thumbs Up

When I pulled the Bearmach one out of the bag I was horrified at the look of the thing so I will definitely be refurbishing the old one now I know what some people pass off as OEM Shocked
