I have done it myself from the start and am gonna keep doing it myself till the end. I´m sure I do it better than the anyone else would ( its MY car ) . Just changed oil yesterday and regreased the wheel bearings and hubs.
When bought it I sprayed everything under the car with Waxoil ( inside the frame to ) and few days ago I took the doors apart and sprayed inside of if with waxoil to. If something serious happen for the engine or the gearbox, I will buy a used parts and replace it. Now the car is 2 years old and going like brand new. Maybe I´m lucky , but nothing at all has failed yet. Not a single bulb to replace. Ok forgot I had to fix the foam inside the drivers seat , thats the only thing I have had to fix yet. Love the DEFENDER, one of the easyest car I have owned if you like to DIY. http://www.defender2.net/gallery/index.php?cat=13451 |

Looking again at the service schedule, it is amazing how little is actually done at a service, and how much you end up being charged for that little!

You are so right. Virtually nothing is done but many things are only checked.
I'll go to an Indy from now on. |

Ditto, I paid the main dealer for the 1 yr and 2 yr service and know for a fact it was not done to the sheet, when it reached 3yrs old I did it myself including changing all the transmission fluids using the guide on here, saved myself about £250 and know it was done right. Isn't that exactly what Defender ownership is all about? My last service cost me about £80 and a few hours on my back. Which is why I say that "I'm off to see my favorite prostitute" when I service my Defender! Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

Independant specialist should be able to more than half that cost for you, easily. I would expect to pay maybe about £250 inclusive of the transmission and axle service

I've just got a TDCi after years of running a Td5 which I serviced every 6k miles. I was amazed to look at the Land Rover maintenance check sheet (above) and find the gearbox oil's supposed to be good for 200k km and the transfer box oil for 80k km.
Is that really the case? How often do you change yours? Phil. |

My 2008 Puma has had the gearbox and transfer box fluids changed twice, and it has not hit 60,000 miles yet. Many here have done it before the stated intervals which do seem a little on the long side. Then again modern oils are capable of going further than stuff of yore. Anyway if it makes you sleep any easier it is not expensive to get it done and you can do it as often as you see fit. There is an excellent DIY guide on the site or you could get it done with a service. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Every year, which in my case is abt every 6000km. Also the diff oils then, and a good greasing. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I changed my transmission oils using oil from Opie and the guide on here , took less than 1 hr, may be a pracebo effect but it all feels much smoother, my car has only 11k on it after 3 years. Now I can be 100% sure all the appropriate bits have the appropriate amount of the correct fluids in them. I also regreased the shafts whilst under the car as well, didnt even need ramps to complete the whole service. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

What`s the labour rate at these dealers, how long do they give ( workshop time) for the job to be done.
As a vehicle technician I can reliably say if you have common sense, basic kit you can service it your self. Just remember before you change the fuel filter get the new out of it`s box fill it with diesel, let it settle remove the old one, fit the new one ( while on flat ground) start it up and let it idle for a minute or two. No air locks no flat battery Simples... Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires. |
