I'm converting my hard top to a soft top and have put hinges on the tailgate so that it side opens.. the swing away carrier will then hopefully fit on to it as if it was being attached to the rear door. Photos are a bit difficult as I'm on my own at the moment and can't hold it up and take the photo easily.. hopefully the one I've taken will give you the idea though..

so it's a wheel carrier made for a door and you are trying to fit it to a tailgate?
looks like you have 3 options ... 1. there are tailgate wheel carriers available 2. if you carrier is a "door" based carrier, you will need to make something up 3. bolt a rear door spare wheel carrier to the inside of your flat bed |

Yes, as I've already got the wheel carrier, I'm looking at option 2.. any suggestions..??
Where can you buy the tailgate carriers (just so that I can have a look). Cheers |

Gareth I'm about to fit a soft top like I did my last defender aswell.
Remember to check the mounting will foul on the hood and make it fit badly at the back. You've probably realized anyway though, but just in case you hadn't there is going to be a type made soon like the Sonic one which is the only use able one at the moment that allows it to fit properly, but cheaper so might be worth the wait? Cheers Tom Edit. if your going to have a sideways swinging tailgate there are a couple of chassis mounted ones you can use fine with a spacer plate fitted, but not if your keeping drop down like me. Hi there pictures of it here.

Spoke to a bloke today who I picked up my fabricated bits from who is planning a NAS rear bumper with the wheel carrier off that. Tom, Looks like there may be a third customer then for your metal fabricator and his wheel carrier
 Has he given any indication of timescale yet? |

I went up today to see them. It sounds like he's going to do it, no idea on time scale though as seem very busy. It sounds good what he's planning, keep a look on there facebook page if your on it as they'll post/ let you know when the prototype ones done.  have a look in the general section as you might like the tailgate hinges he's going to start making to, managed to get my set and seem really simple and clever so no doubt the wheel carrier will be worth the wait.
