strange whine noise from the back
Hy,

my defender from 2008 makes since 3 months a whine noise when slowing down to +/- 30km/h then it's back silence. After looking on some forums it's a problem with the rear diff. So changed my wheelbearings and fitted an ashcroft locker and new pinion bearings. this at 65 000 km but the noise is still there ? it's really awfull to hear it Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

someone with the same problem or tips ?

grtz
Tarcis

ps. sorry for my english it's not that good I am from Belgium Smile

Have you checked the oil levels and free play in the rest of the driveline? Steve.

Whine is typically caused by sub-optimal meshing of the crownwheel and pinion. Did you rebuild the diff yourself? Are you sure that the pinion height was set correctly when the new bearings were put in? Was the crownwheel backlash set up correctly? Was the pinion/crownwheel contact pattern checked? Any errors here are likely to cause whine.

Are you sure it isn't tyre wear? Sometimes rotational wear irregularities (tread blocks worn more on the leading edge) can make whining noises, consider swapping the tyres from one side with the other to see if it makes a difference.

I had a strange "bag pipe" type noise which rose and fell then disappeared at various times at 97K and just before the warranty ran out.
The Cook thought it was gearbox area, I thought it was engine and an indy said it was the rear diff. So off to the stealer with a short list of things to be done under warranty and they said ....transfer box. At 97K they would normally install a recon box but there were none available anywhere so I got a new box instead.
No noise now and certainly no complaints from me about LRA and this stealers service.
AlanH.

Sometimes the pinion gets loose and therefore the proper mesh is gone. If not, maybe one of the bearings is gone. Puma 110" SW
