Which is, no doubt, why the TSB says in effect, "don't mess about, just change the whole engine".

For info.
Essentially contact your dealer if this happens to you and Landrover will judge the case on its merits and may choose to pay in full, part, or not at all. |

The vehicle went into the maindealer last week. The head was removed and a detailed inspection carried out. There is a lot of damage with the only option to replace the engine. The service manager has presented my case to Land Rover via Mike on the Land Rover customer service link on this site.A case will be put before the CRC (Customer Relationship Centre) when all the necessary info has been forwarded to Mike. I got an e-mail today from the service manager looking for some additional information. Anyway I will keep you posted on developments. Thanks for the interest and the good wishes. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Don't have all of the details to hand but some of the noise was down to piston slap. There's damage to the back of the head and cylinder damage amongst other things. The maindealer had to submit a report to the technical/engineering dept at Land Rover along with the service history of the vehicle. I've to submit a few more details, so that is where things are at the moment. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Good news. I got word today that Land Rover have agreed to replace the engine. I have to pay a percentage to the overall cost but I am very happy with the outcome. Don't want to go into all the details as it would not be fair on Land Rover but suffice to say that I'm much happier today than I was when I first posted this. I can more than live with the modest percentage I've to contribute to the overall cost.
If it had happened within the three year warranty period Land Rover would have stumped up 100% of the cost but I am happy to say that they have been very fair with the approach they have taken. Many thanks to Mike on the Land Rover Customer Service link on this site who has been very helpful. Having such a direct link to Land Rover made the process so much easier. I think the following factors went in my favour. Regularly serviced Relatively low milage Good relationship with the service manager at a maindealer. He did a lot of work on this to. I've contacted both Mike at Land Rover and the customer service manager at the maindealer to O.K. the deal. All that remains now is for the engine to be ordered and installed. My MOT will be due in a couple of months so I'll need to get some miles on the engine before they start revving it for the smoke test. Might delay the test for a month or so So thanks for all who followed this as wished me well. I can now take the troops off short rations . 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Well done! We had to have the entire cooling system replaced on our Freelander2 just out of warranty and thanks for a brilliant local dealer and LR Customer Services, only paid ~15% of the bill. One of the reasons why I'm still a loyal customer.
