You're right, but my Alfa is a sneaky little bar steward when it comes to reliability - I've had absolutely zero issues with it in the UK (i.e. 99% of the time). However, have taken 2 trips around Europe in the last 2 years - had issues at the furthest points away from home both times Evil or Very Mad. Last year the battery died down in Monaco (my high school French didn't extend to explaining that to a French garage), and this year I killed the clutch going over the Stelvio Pass in Italy (had to leave it in Switzerland for 2 weeks to be repaired Big Cry). 2013 Defender 110 XS DCPU

And more on topic - cubby look good, what you going to mount in it?

There's a plan for that - rack of carling switches for various bits and pieces (extra lights etc). Planning on moving the head unit into the other slot so I can drop a screen into the dash - all will be revealed, er, when I've got the money for it all Laughing 2013 Defender 110 XS DCPU

My GT took us France, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Italy - Ferry to Sardina (don't leave the alarm on!), back to France and back to Blighty without a hiccup.

Disco struggled to move out the end of the road when the EGR valves went Rolling Eyes

Of course right now I am lurking on disco4.com soaking up all the rumours of the MY14 changes and working out how I can justify another green oval in my life again... Disco 3 gone but the memory of the bills remain...
XS 110 Utility maybe one day..... (did they fix the quality yet?)

Been away a while, hectic times with work, plus a new and shiny 'other' car to play with, means the Defender has been feeling a little neglected. So, to sort that, some early Christmas presents for her - a swing-away wheel carrier, checkerplate, snow cowl, and the main piece - a new (and far more shiny than expected) lid for load bay.

Apologies for the p**s-poor smartphone shots - it was cold and wet, and I couldn't be bothered faffing around...

I shall pop out and take some more photos once it gets light again tomorrow, but if you want to have a look at the details, I'm pretty sure* it's one of these.

*I ordered it through a friend of mine that builds custom Defenders, and he didn't tell me exactly where he got it from, but pretty sure it's that place... 2013 Defender 110 XS DCPU

Thanks for the extra photos Bow down your cover looks great and obviously a lot more secure than the tonneau cover I currently have, have to say though my tonneau is more watertight Embarassed

Well, not been on here much recently, but have been quietly enjoying the Defender over the winter, and cooking up some rather elaborate ICE plans (which I was hoping would be the next post I did). That is, right up until last week, when this happened:

Bit of a knocking noise under the bonnet, followed by smoke seeping out and a somewhat ominous burning smell. Lifted the bonnet to see the engine's internal redecoration of the bay. So, for the second time in its less than one year of life, it was on the back of an AA recovery truck and on its way to *spit*Stratstones*spit* in Cheltenham.

Diagnosis at the end of last week was a failed Head Gasket - now I'm no mechanic, but would have expected it to last more than 6800 miles... 2013 Defender 110 XS DCPU

Finally got my truck back from Stratstone - turns out that the diagnosis of Head Gasket failure was complete nonsense. Actual issue was a failure in the Oil Cooler, which in turn contaminated the water and damaged the heater element and radiator. So, all those components have been replaced and we're back on the road.

Apparently there's a Service Bulletin around the oil cooler, but not being safety-related is replaced by-customer-complaint-only... 2013 Defender 110 XS DCPU

How do you find the wheel carrier?

I have the same one and have had to add modifications. It used to flex over bumps....so much so that it worked the anti luce pin open and swung out whilst on the move. I put a padlock through the pin.

I also made a bump stop out of, I think, 2 inch box section and mounted that on the body to crossmember bolts. I then evostik rubber strip on the front face. It has been on the land rover nearly 15000 miles now and I have only just had to replace the thin rubber strip. This rests on the bottom frame of the carrier, right behind the bottom of the wheel and has prevented all flex and rattling in it.

Even with this bump stop in place, I now always have a padlock through the anti luce pin!

Not had too many problems with it so far, although I've probably only done a couple hundred miles since it was fitted. There is something of a squeak whilst driving - haven't had chance to narrow it down to the wheel carrier or the new lid on the load area. Bit more investigation required... 2013 Defender 110 XS DCPU
