CALLING ALL ELECTRONIC EXPERTS
Greetings to all from sunny Cape Town!

Here is a brief description of the problem: 2011 110 Puma; 2nd battery fitted professionally with a National Luna split charging system; 2 power points fitted at the rear of the vehicle. One power point used to power a National Luna fridge / freezer which has a Danfoss compressor.
The problem: I am a radio amateur (HAM); fitted in the vehicle is a HF transceiver. Power for the radio is direct from the 2nd battery. When the fridge is running and the radio is on, there is a very high level of interference on the radio. If I switch the fridge off, no noise.

Simple solution is to switch the fridge when transmitting; however, I have, at times, forgotten to put the fridge back on. Besides my beer not being ice cold, I also have an irate wife!! Rolling Eyes

Any solutions??

Sounds like the fridge's motor is not suppressed. Have a read of this:-

Hi Sam,

sounds like a similar problem I had in Bots last summer.

Ferrites on the power line to the fridge may help.

The following appears to be the solution. It may help others HAMS who also operate fridges/freezers with Danfoss compressors.

All fridges using the Danfoss compressor are notorious when it comes to the rf noise issues. The secret is to use a mains EMI filter, basically a small module which gets inserted inside the fridge in the power line (both positive and negative goes through it), and it's casing get connected to the metal casing of the fridge.

The noise you hear on the radio is caused by the compressor controller, and radiates through the 12 volt power cable connected to the fridge. The filter absorbs the rf and stops it from getting out of the fridge.

Thanks to those who responded

Sam

Maplin in the UK do a cheap mains RFI filter module

http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/delta-suppression-filter-rg21x

I have used these with great success for all kind of noise problems and only £2.99 so not a bank breaker if it does not work for you. 2008 Defender 110 XS CSW
