Rain, Snow, Leaves, all the reasons your heater intake blocks up- hence the snow cowl.

For me thr true question is why dont they come with an integral and water tight snorkel as standard?

Still toying with the idea of moving my air intake to the top of the wing and covering it with a snow cowl.

To be honest, very few people actually need them as most defenders live there life on dry land. If you are going in deep enough to worry about your air intake being submerged then most likely event is your ecu's are already underwater, along with your floor mats, Battery compartment, fuses, axle and gearbox breathers so the damage may have already been done.

I can't see how much difference a few inches will make in the long run

The air intake used to be on top of the wing on 2.5 N/A and i believe V8. It moved to the side with the launch of the 2.5 TD engine. 2005 Td5 90 XS

It's more about a clearer, shorter run for the intake of air than for extreme fording use.

The major issue with the air intake's location is that it is right by the front wheelarch and sucks in all the dust when driving on gravel roads.

This is why most owners in Africa/Oz put on a RAI as soon as they buy a Defender.

You do not want to see an air filter after driving 1000km of Namibia's finest gravel roads without a snorkel Shocked --

Correct. My pre turbo 110 has no side vents and no wing vent (other than the heater. All it had was the oil-bath air filter. The air was taken in around the top of the filter housing which was up near the top of the engine
