Towbar drop plate thingy
Guys, I need to lower the towball on my Defender. Ideally, I need it lowered by about 100mm (4 inches for our older members Smile ) Reason being, is the trailer I use for my track bike just sits too high at the front and I'm worried the back end will scrape if I go over speed bumps or something.

I dont really want to spend too much, and dont want a Dixon-Bate (?) type..... would it be ok to get a piece of 10mm thick steel the correct size and drill extra holes where I need to mount the towball, then fix it to the existing arrangement? It would only be used for this particular trailer (max weight all in of about 300-320kgs).

If we reckon it'd be ok to do that, is there anyone on here with the talent/facility to cut/drill me a piece, by any chance? I've measured that it'd need to be approx 200mmx150mmx10mm. Obviously I would pay/buy the beers/be appreciative, etc etc if there is.

Cheers chaps! Thumbs Up Mark

I had the same problem.

I got a second hand drop down plate put onto the existing towbar mount. Now towstwin axle trailers with both wheels on the floor. Cost £70 and they fitted it.

I'll take some pics tomorrow if they would help.

Cheers

Thanks Ian.....thats the sort of idea I had, but maybe get it made up, rather than buy purpose made - would be good to see some pics though, thanks!

Cheers Ken, I'll have a word......thanks for the pics, Ian. That'd be fine, actually, as it'll only be on there when I tow this particular trailer (hate to say it, but I don't particularly like the design of it, although it probably works better than most things....just the cost of it that puts me off a bit, too. Sure I could get someone to 'construct' something like it, non adjustable, for not much dosh)

Cheers chaps! Mark

I have just made a plate to drop the ball height on my NAS hitch. Made from 15mm plate bolts to 4 holes in NAS and drops ball 65mm to allow twin axle trailer to sit correctly. Just painted prior to fitting Saturday before heading off to Gaydon.

Would post pics but not sure how at present.

Drop Plate
Hi Adrian, How did your drop plate work out for you. I note that you used 15mm steel and dropped the ball 65mm. Did it tow OK with no additional support struts? Planning to get something similar made up myself.

Cheers

You would probably be better putting a spacer under the hitch on the trailer, so it raises up the hitch while keeping the trailer at the same height.

Took the measurements to a local engineering works and got a drop plate cut from a sheet of 15mm steel. It's now painted and bolted on. Tow bar now dropped 65mm. Solid as a rock. Looks neat.

Perfect!!
