There are indeed a lot of really good country roads in the UK - and some of the most scenic of those are indeed in the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales National Parks - as seen during the title sequences of All Creatures Great and Small. There are some awesome roads with awesome views - but mostly tarmac and for normal car use - ie. they appear on normal road maps.

In the UK 'green lane' usually refers to unsurfaced byways which never quite made it into the program of being upgraded to tarmac! Some are gravel tracks, but some are barely visible as they are grass covered and cut across or along the edges of grass fields. These are the ones where you really need the closer detail OS Maps - such as the LandRanger Series - as byways are marked with a particular type of line. However, in addition you need up to date information about the actual legal status of the byways as some have had their 'legal' status removed through national legislation. Others may be under "Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders', which mean they have been closed for a period of time. So even though they may be shown on the map you may not be allowed to drive on them.

One of the best and most scenic routes in the North York Moors is Rudland Rigg. Most of it is is just a rough gravel track, but at one end there are some reasonably 'technical' rocky sections where your Land Rover suspension will get a good workout!! It is quite a robust road so is suitable in most weather conditions. Some other tracks can be very muddy and rutted so you ideally either only drive them in good weather and also go with another vehicle, preferably with a winch, in case you get stuck!

We used to use OziExplorer on our inboard computer in our comp truck, and it does support Land Ranger maps. I'm not sure how much they are to download.

We swopped to Memory Map when we got our iPad and iPhones as at the moment OziExplorer isn't availabe on iOS (although it is on android!). With an iPad you need the 3G model though as the wi-fi only one doesn't have GPS.

For our upcoming trip to Australia we have downloaded the HEMA maps app - which is built on the Memory Map platform and so if very familiar for us to use.

Hello Pam, thnx for the response.
The maps I have are mostly "selfmade".
I use OziExplorer uring the ride to automatic draw the tracks.
And I put POI on potential free campsites, deep water crossing spots, muddy roads etc).
Back home I use that to make a final version (PLT, and convert that also to KML).
Since a year I use a tablet PC (mounted on a ram) instead of my old notebook.
And that is a big improvement.

All that is also part of the fun Very Happy.

Meeting up with some locals is always a good idea.
Especially if you don't now what to expect you can help each other if you get stuck in the mud etc.
And doing some greenlaning with a small groep of LR's is always good for having some nice chats.

CU, Harald

Not sure when you're planning on coming over but the Yorkshire Off road Club have a couple of weekend events in the North York Moors this year with camping near Helmsley. You're more than welcome to join us and "tag along" on one of the green lane trips. We have a trials competition on the Sunday but the other days there's normally one or more green lane groups heading out.

The Helmsley events are July 18th-20th and August 22nd-25th http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/
