For around £25 - £40 you can get a basic tool for diagnosis etc, for about £60 - £120 you can get those features and some extras such as a scan gauge / ultra gauge.
I've got a basic one from eBay from a place called BeatTheGarage (or used to be) photos in my Gallery. Mine lets you check VIN, view codes and erase them. Just the basics but that was what I wanted and works great. Not over complicated either. No Guts, No Glory. 🇬🇧ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ¥ó ®ó §ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ·ó ¬ó ³ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ³ó £ó ´ó ¿ðŸ‡®ðŸ‡ªðŸ‡ºðŸ‡¸â›½ï¸ðŸ›¢ï¸âš™ï¸ðŸ§°ðŸ’ª |

I missed that thread, if it's causing a code to flag up it will but if not it won't.
I just read the thread you mention, a basic tool won't do that but a diagnostic tool like the dealers have would cost a fortune much more than a dealer visit. No Guts, No Glory. 🇬🇧ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ¥ó ®ó §ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ·ó ¬ó ³ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ³ó £ó ´ó ¿ðŸ‡®ðŸ‡ªðŸ‡ºðŸ‡¸â›½ï¸ðŸ›¢ï¸âš™ï¸ðŸ§°ðŸ’ª |
