Just to add fuel to the fire I really enjoyed the posts earlier (and I`am not taking the mick either) it nice to see a good debate.
Anyway my own view on a road side test by vosa and this I know by personal experience the vosa man could`ent get his test probe in to my filler neck quick enough to check for red diesel soon as he saw my defender his eyes lit up (the last one rusty old e reg) unfortunately it was clean white diesel never mind eh !

I've been stopped at the roadside too in the recent past - you could see the copper's eyes light up as he saw the defender 5 cars back and rapidly waved the 4 cars in front on their way.

defenders are just too interesting not to stop Rolling Eyes

I got stopped a year or two back by vosa and they also waved cars on to get to mine Rolling Eyes they seemed annoyed when they looked at the tyres on mine and saw they were all brand new. They didn't want to pay for the diesel they took out either, I reckon they put it all in a can and fill there own tanks with it Rolling with laughter

I was having a think today, it's really dangerous doing thinking without a safetynet, and was wondering about this fact that all that is required supposedly for the MoT test is a visible cat box on the downpipe. My thinking was what would be wrong with having a faux cat over the existing de-cat pipe. A can that was the right size sliced down the middle and designed to slip over the pipe and tacked on in place, or drop the joint where the mid pipe goes and slide on from there(easiest joint to undo and not having to drop the gearbox cross member)
I was thinking about this as yes I still have my cat but just in case the powers that be decide they can test the emissions I don't want to rip the guts out just yet.

Funny thing about smoke test, I have all my tests from 1 year old,
The results show a massive reduction after cat removal and remap,

Could be remap I suppose but I tell myself it's cleaner without cat Rolling with laughter

As I recall the diesel smoke test came in to force around 1993 /4.
Granted back then I was just coming out of my apprenticeship so mot testing was not my job, got stiched up with frontera and ecotec engine faults instead.
As I recall as long as you gave an old astra or Bedford midi a good clear out before hand they mostly went thru, this was in the days when electronic pumps were just becoming common place and common rail was largely unknown / unseen and they managed to pass the test.
So as long as your not blowing out loads of soot and black smoke, I would have thought it would be ok.
That is until they start checking for nox readings at tail pipes then there may be a problem.
Also I did an mot on 2010 transit 85 / 280 so checked the vsi on the mot data base (if there are any testers reading this I got a surprise) according to mot / vosa data base it comes up as f.w.d. a.b.s. turbo. but there is no cat listed in the vsi section ?? anyway did mot, check exhaust and there it was a very nice gen cat fitted to the exhaust, so going by the book the owner could have legally removed it and I could have if I had`ent checked the data base incorrectly failed. It if I had`ent checked it this would have legally dropped me right in it If the guy new his stuff.
So from a testers point of view if it looks like a cat even if there is nothing in side it all we can do is pass it. After all the mot test is only a visual inspection to ensure minimum standard of road worthiness the only tools we are allowed to use are the ones on the mot board as seen from the viewing area. No infra red thermometers to check pre and post cat or dpf temperatures, if we are caught using anything but the mot tools and the vosa man sees this we are in trouble.
It would be nice to see a response from any other testers that may be on this forum

Just had a rummage through the file, I bought new in November 2006 and first test in October 2007 but I can't find these results.

Year. Smoke DSL.
2008. 0.8.
2009. 0.8
2010. 0.4
Tuned and decat 2010
2011. 0.1
2012. 0.05
2013. 0.2

All tests carried out in same test centre, DOE test, similar to UK MOT.

I'm not a tester myself, but very often the 'visual' is the issue. If it can't be seen, it can't be checked and is just advised. All the later models (D3/D4/RRS etc) come back with advisories stating that the engine cover or sump/splash covers obstruct visual checking of things. It still passes but the tester has to cover him/herself with the advisory on the test sheet. Most MOT stations need to get on with the test and so generally won't go out of their way to find an issue they can't see. 10MY L322 TdV8 - Ipanema Sand
