yep - they're moving to a 2.2ltr pumpa (as per modeo, galaxy etc)
this will have a dpf which concerns me a little as I understand they don't like bio diesel but would love to know if this is the case from 'someone in the know' virtually the same power but presumably better emissions like you say and lower road tax - £125? how do you know that? |

For commercials they usually make a concession for cheaper tax on vehicles that meet the current emissions legislation. i.e. a few years ago when EU4 came in, all commercials were taxed at ~£185, except those meeting EU4 which are a lower rate.
Now that a new emission standard is coming into effect, they will have moved the discount to EU5. Does this mean that the Transit will be dropping the 2.4 and going over to the 2.2 as well? Seems odd that they had a 2.0 in front wheel drive transits and a 2.4 for the 4x4 and rear wheel drive. They then dropped the 2.0 and used the 2.2 instead. Don't mix up the new Mk4 Mondeo's 2.2 with that fitted to the Transit as they are two different engines. The Transit 2.2 is the PUMA unit developed from the 2.0 first introduced in the Mk3 Mondeo as a TDDi 115PS unit, this was then fitted with common-rail and available as 90PS, 115PS and 130PS. When the Mk4 Mondeo came along it used the Peugeot developed DW10 unit also found in Volvo's, Focus, Kuga, etc. If you know this already, then feel free to ignore or take the mickey Harvey |

LGV commercial rates: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Ownin...G_10012524 say so Must remember to tick "Notify me when a reply is posted", most forums default to this, keep forgetting! harvey - useful info thanks. DPF not that robust I hear (in Defender owner terms) and expensive part to replace, wonder if they can get to EU5 without it? I assumed it would be a Puma variant as suggested elsewhere on the forum, still wonder if its 2.2 or they will update the 2.4, no reason why it cannot be updated if its most cost effective route I suppose? I read on here somewhere that its just stroke (not bore) that's different in capacity but the 2.4 has more robust components, crank etc which is why its used on more hardcore transit and the Defender. Want to see if there are any good rumours of a change this year... might be worth the wait (have to wait for July build for MY11 one anyway) Disco 3 gone but the memory of the bills remain... XS 110 Utility maybe one day..... (did they fix the quality yet?) |

googling suggests the new LRX will get "2.2-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine (with 160hp and 400 Nm of torque)", but this sounds like the more road-based unit than the rugged version of the engine. Notes its Ford/PSA based though, if that helps identify it.
Maybe switch Defender to same engine at the same time to reduce costs? Disco 3 gone but the memory of the bills remain... XS 110 Utility maybe one day..... (did they fix the quality yet?) |

Yes, the 160ps & 400Nm unit is the DW12 based engine from the PSA stable, as used in the large Fords (Mondeo/Galaxy), Freelander2 & Peugeots.
Peugeot, Fiat & Citroen use the 2.2 engines in their commercials. Main problem appears to be that reverse gear is too high in the 6-speed box so at high gross weights there is some vibrations and the clutch gets fried. They do 100, 110, 120ps versions in the vans. In the cars they're 160ps, 175ps & 180ps. Lower power get 5-speed box, 120ps & cars are 6-speed. Seeing as LR are using the 2.2 in the Freelander & a variant of it with the 2.7 (+3.0) V6 and 3.6 (soon to be 4.0) V8 it would make sense to drop a commercialised version in the Defender. I would be suprised if LR drop the 2.4 Puma for a 2.2 Puma, unless Ford are dropping the 2.4 altogether. Harvey |

But transit 2.2L and 2.4 L ARE THE SAME ENGINE, the 2.4 have ONLY more stroke!!!!!
May be 2.2L EURO5 on Defender will be another engine, not the Puma...... But, I'm sure, the PUMA is EU5 READY!!!!! (info from Ford Puma factory) so.... I don't know, I don't understand...... Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition IID Pro MV License |

Exactly, I was wondering whether Ford have decided to use one (2.2) crank instead of two, thus my suggesting they're could drop the 2.4 Puma. What's the difference between the 2.0 and 2.2 Puma? Assume it's the bore only. Harvey |

Ranger 2.4?
So they're dropping the 2.5 (which is basically a VM unit) for the Trany lump. What's happening with the 3.0 4-cyl? Dropping the 3.2 5-cyl Trany unit in? Nissan are upping the Navara 2.5 from 171ps to 190ps & introducing a 235ps 3.0 v6 diesel. |

Love that everyone is so well informed!
I did not realise there was a EU5 TDCi Transit engine, has to be the logical choice (assuming the DPF can survive life on the farm, or Chelsea high street). Ford ranger has the same 2.4 as the new LRX/baby rangie allegedly, so would assume all one and the same? If they can buy the EU5 form form, and the only major change is fitting in the DPF, should be no reason why not sooner than later perhaps? dgardel - hard to see in your pic, but where exactly is the DPF, is that just at the start of the exhaust, with header bolted to one end and centre section on the other? Could be akward location on Defender with transmission tunnel? Disco 3 gone but the memory of the bills remain... XS 110 Utility maybe one day..... (did they fix the quality yet?) |
