River Wey full and ready to burst its banks in Godalming we are 350ft above sea level so no risk of flooding but 10500 homes here without power
But not us we brought the genny back from the caravan in the new forest at Xmas  It's good to be back from the dark side

At last I can post a reply as we have electricity back after 12 hours off grid
There are four roads out of our village. One is closed because the ford is impassable. Second is closed because of fallen trees and the third is just passable in the Defender but having just driven it there is a large tree that is at an alarming angle and is entwined with power cables. The fourth is the 'safe' route out as it runs up a hill into Ilminster. Not so safe now as there has been a major landslip on it and it will be shut for months apparently 
I would say that by this afternoon we will probably be cut off, the wind has now eased off but it is still raining. However, whilst I was out I must have seen ten trucks loaded with straw heading towards the levels so at least help is getting through for the farmers. Good news - live on top of a hill so little chance of being flooded
Bad news - rather exposed, alittle too exposed for my rather large ex greenhouse, which turned into a kite last night !!!!! I now have random glass effect grass |

As much as I'd like too, I'll refrain from ranting about the media and it's aggressive, invasive saturation coverage of events such as the recent flooding.
I haven't been affected by the most recent flooding. However I was affected by the tidal surge flooding of 5/6 December. Luckily my own home wasn't flooded, but the homes of 120 or so of my neighbours and fellow villagers were, including my immediate next door neighbour. my garden and garage were flooded though As they found out, (and luckily I didn't) it only takes a few inches of filthy brown water to render your home uninhabitable. Especially so once the floodwater has entered and overflowed the sewers. Others were not so lucky and their homes were more severely affected. This was largely ignored by the national media. The last thing I would have wanted was footage of me leaving my house with a hold all of only essentials to have been shown on the bbc news at ten for the viewing pleasure of every potential looter. I do think media coverage can help in the aftermath of events since public outcry can be helpful in holding democratically elected politicians to account, indeed it is essential for a healthily functioning democracy. Luckily at low tide the water level subsided and the expected second surge didn't materialise the following morning. That night is one that I won't forget in a hurry that's for sure. |
