As the title suggests, with the imminent tightening of the UK MOT, and also to cater for similar rulings in other EU countries, all decat pipes are going to need a catalyst putting back on.
Due to the torrent of PM's received last week about the subject, I called in our exhaust manufacturers for a meeting today so we could discuss methods of retro fitting a new cat onto an existing decat, as well as altering our range of 304 grade decat pipes for the Td5 and 2.4 Puma (2.2 faux cat/dpf pipes will be ready soon too!). Some great ideas came from the meeting, and I should have some examples and prices in the next few days, so stay tuned! Kind regards, Gary. |

Oh the irony of selling a de - cat exhaust section on one hand ( non road use obviously) and the catalytic converter to replace the one you paid to remove in the first place

Our faux pipe for the Td5 can be fitted/removed/swapped in just a few minutes, not that you'd ever have to!
The faux pipe for the puma 2.4 is a bit more complicated due to packaging, but will never have to be removed either! Sport cats are an option if you really want, but the faux Re-Cat pipes will be cheaper and will look just as good. |

This is a. Tricky topic, I was saving for a full system with decat. However in light of recent changes my desire has turned to a sports cat, although ive always preferred the decat.
I love the idea of a faux cat however. I worry about the plausibility of one if while stamping down this new law, the government set up VOSA traps to investigate wether a cat is indeed fitted. Unfortunately I fear that if a nice shiney stainless system is spotted then further investigation may be had. Perhaps im being over cautious, but with a statemnet in the mot book being written as vague as it has been it seems to be very unclear of how the future for cats will be |

The words used in the rule book say "initially a visual inspection" but would to me indicate they will be looking further into the cat its self at some point to ensure faux cats are not in use.
I think the best option is to keep it legal and fit a real cat back into the pipe. Pete |

You know my view, the subject is closed as far as I am concerned. I said my piece and had to defend every word!
Fitting a 'real' cat, or not removing it in the first place is the way to go. It wasn't a rant either, it was an expression of a POV that some folk didn't like - thats life. |

I think it's worth pointing out that the purpose of the MOT test is to ensure that cars are checked to see that they comply with key roadworthiness and environmental requirements in the Road Vehicle Construction and Use Regulations 1986 and the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 as amended. As mentioned earlier a random roadsite test might identify a decat pipe and I can only see them increasing the stringency of applying the laws and using the full range of penalties available to them. For those wanted to run the gauntlet then other marques and aftermarket suppliers seem to have solved the issue quite simply - a flanged cat and de-cat pipe of equal overall length are interchangable in the exhaust system and usually only require the undoing of 6 bolts to swap over. I'd be interested in knowing what the legal position was for a company looking to sell an item deliberately intended to mislead and circumvent the law. If people feel that a standard cat limits performance then maybe the legal way to go would be a more free flowing sports type cat. Have your cake and eat it too? |
