United Kingdom 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SW Stornoway Grey
Hi All...Yes I think it's fair to say we are all sick of this weather by now.

However bad it looks locally in Berkshire, we have been lucky compared to others further West.

Whilst we live in the Thames Valley, and are surrounded by a number of Rivers, a Canal, and numerous Lakes we have come to expect flooding occasionally, but recent conditions have now been hanging around with no current end in sight. When we moved here, 17 years ago, avoiding flood risk never seriously figured in our thinking, it certainly would now!

One property a few miles from us recently advertised (and sold) with the claim of having 'occasional river views!

There are 4 ways in and out of our village (luckily situated on a hill) and the 'road view' below is typical of what we have faced so far this year, normal flooding depth has been < 0.5 M (usually around 150-200mm) so not a real problem for most 4X4s if taken carefully, lose the road, a real risk at night as some have found, and the ditches will claim another casualty.

Several 'standard' vehicles have been caught out, especially those favouring low air intake positions within their engine bays, flooding even at low depths can present a real problem here, especially with passing vehicles causing waves to wash underneath.

Anyway looking forward to Spring/Summer...

This particular road has been in and out of flooding for the past month, not high in this photo and around 500 M in overall length. SKIP

Another Defender saves the day!

Funny thing is I was near there at the very same weekend and backed out of crossing because I knew it wasn't safe, to my horror at the time though there was cars flying through there at about 30mph.
No wonder this happened, road should have been closed though IMO. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON

Just been watching the local news, farmers trying to move their livestock before it drowns, some having to sell their stock as there is nowhere to move it. Pumping is stopping as the rivers can't take anymore capacity.

A lot of people are asking where is all the help the townies in Whitehall have promised ?

Getting wellied by Prince Charles no doubt! Rolling with laughter
I think it's disgraceful that it wasn't sorted weeks ago, they've left it so late that there is as good as risk to life.
And what is the point in sending the army down? They can't move 40 square miles of water with the best will in the world.
And the best thing is if I remember correctly it was a young schoolboys idea to have the army "help" them out down there. Laughing Not the government or EA which they claim they initiated. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON

Agreed the Army can't move the water but they can drive tractors and help building flood defenses.

I have been talking with the farmers here today and they are doing everything they can to help, they have drier land for the animals, the trailers etc. to move them but not the manpower to make much difference.

I little bit of planning and extra bodies can make a lot of difference, it will not save the houses from being flooded but at least it will give the farmers some hope that they can carry on when the floods have gone.

Lets be fair, if the farms go a lot of the houses will not be needed as that is where the farm workers live.

From what I've seen on the news though it seems to me like fellow farmers that are helping out there and not the Army, having said that I'm not there so I can't really comment too much.
I think a lot more people would be there if they could afford to get there and cover the costs involved. Rolling Eyes KEEP CALM AND Drill ON

It is all the farmers that are helping out but more hands make light work.

The marines have now been deployed to fill sand bags and help people move belongings.

Maybe a few with guns to protect the empty properties would not go amiss, the looters seem to be able to get in where all others fail. That is why a lot of people will not leave - don't believe everything the BBC is reporting.

Being a few miles from where all the problems are and with neighbours who are there helping the truth is not quite what is being reported.

Living over 1000 ft above sea level and on the top of a hill, I really feel for all these poor people getting flooded out. I think this time it must be even worse than losing things in a fire; at least after a fire, you can get down to rebuilding things and getting back to normal. This must seem like there is no end to the misery.
I felt so sorry for a couple on the news and who were having to get rid of all their calves, send the horses elsewhere and try find homes for the goats, when she said that the farm might go under both literally and financially, I couldn't imagine what it must be like.

Wessex 4x4 Response have had a dozen members on a rota for a couple of weeks now, ferrying people, food and other supplies in and out of some of the affected villages.

While they have been there the Fire Service have had 2 fully liveried quad bikes nicked and there have been countless instances of looting. A member down there has CCTV footage of one of the Transits complete with the usual trio of scum on board - they need feckin drowning.

We've been pulled out for now as the levels on the roads now exceed safe wading capacity. The only way in or out now is boat. I'm not one for prayer, but sure as hell my thoughts are with the poor souls staying in their homes this weekend. Sad

So far the resourcing has been managed locally by the W. Somerset team, but if it escalates in the next 36 hours in the way we're expecting, the West Dorset team I'm in are ready to get stuck in and help.

It would be nice to think that natural justice might result in finding an odd transit or two playing submarine complete with crew in the bottom of a ditch.

Journey to work normally takes 20 mins today it took over 1 1/2 hours because idiot car drivers believe their pride and joys can do what a defender or any decent 4x4 can do.
I pulled three people out of the water got thanked only once.

So many cars trying to go through water that is 8 to 10" deep.

That said found a route to work which went through about 2 feet of water.....was mucho fun and no other cars about..... Whistle The fear of death is the most unjustified of all fears, for there's no risk of accident for someone who's dead.
