whilst I agree it is good practice to renew AND I converted to Tdi type when I did mine, they will go again, with care 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

You can keep the spacer system, but change to the two lock nut system, if you don't want to go the full job.

thanks all does anyone know what the procedure is with the spacer system? do you just nip the nut or really tight? cheers ed

Really really tight. That's one of the reasons a lot of people remove them.

Just looked somewhere else and got
" fit stake nut & tighten to 210Nm or 150lbft" That sounds better Sorry Andy |

Yes removed mine on my Td5, and will do on my Tdci when I do work in that area.
I found it very difficult to set the bearings correctly with out having spacers available, then assembling dry, testing for play then if correct, dissemble grease then reassemble. When I went for the "old spacer will be near enough route" I got play in bearings once they had settled. Andy |

Just overhauled my front axle due to a disintegrated halfshaft and can confirm that the correct torque figure for the hub nut (spacer system) is 150 lbft.
The stakeable hub nuts shouldn't be reused, but can be in an emergency provided that they are not damaged when "unstaked". If there are any breaks, tears, or similar in the collar that you stake, you must replace them. Beware Britpart nuts - I bought four a year ago which don't fit the stub axles (they will in fact destroy the thread on the stub axle if screwed on - ask me how I know)! If you opt to replace the single nut with the earlier two nut system but keep the spacer, then torque the inner nut to 150 lbft in the usual way. If you ditch the spacer you must go to the two nut system and adjust the old fashioned way (ie don't torque to the above figure - if you do you'll destroy just about everything)! IN my case after removing the halfshaft fragments I have had to strip and inspect the Ashcroft ATB to make sure that it wasn't full of fragments. A very well-engineered bit of kit, I just keep being more and more impressed with it! |
