Landyglass rear heated screen - optional LED 3rd brake light
There is a landyglass feature in the March LRM monthly. It talks about a matching rear door replacement glass, and it shows a picture of the finished job on a 110 and a 90. On the 110 it seems that the rear door screen is the standard one with the orange heating element bands and the standard brake light visible. But on the 90 it looks like a replacement glass with on the top a LED brake light...

Now on the landyglass website I read that replacement glass is available with a LED brake light available at extra cost.
http://www.landyglass.net/defender-110-products.html

As there are no clear pictures of this LED brake light, does anybody know more about this? Maybe someone has this installed and could give their opinion and especially post some better pictures than on Landyglass website or in the March LRM magazine. Bow down

My concrete question is, is such Landyglass replacement heated rear screen plus the optional rear LED brake light available in the standard (=light green) tinted glass as an individual option to match the ex factory Defender windows (so not in the dark grey Venus 10 tint)?

If that would be possible, it could be an interesting upgrade which would do away with the low tech standard rear window brake light.

Eric

Edited for additional comments.... As an alternative to above, has any of the site sponsors ever thought of trying to come up with a LED rear brake light solution, either as direct replacement of the standard brake light unit alone, or as a full new heated screen with integrated LED brake light? I do not mean using a LED light bulb in the existing brake light unit by this. Cool You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Hi Eric,

Having met him, I'm sure if you gave Dave a call, he'd be happy to tell you what you need to know.

He is Landyglass as far as I know.

Best,

Tiger, thanks for the link. But that is the dark tinted version which I cannot use.

Mal, thanks for the links. Can and will check, but I think this subject would raise enough forum interest to put information out in the open.

Landyglass do 'bespoke' supply and fitting. I would be very surprised if your query hasn't been asked before and they may already have them.

I have no doubt that Landyglass do a fantastic job, have seen some pictures on here of their glass side/rear panels, and I am sure it is top quality indeed. My point is not if they could offer an add-on LED center stop lamp, but more if either Landyglass, or any other (site sponsor)supplier have tackled the idea of producing a first class rear door window replacement with a bespoke first class LED stop lamp which could replace the original rear window and stop lamp.
I know the question has been asked on the forum several times in the past, and believe the only one who at one point said that they were working on such item were Mobilecenter,... but then it remained quiet. Sad
I think such a replacement window plus properly E marked LED stop lamp would get a lot of interest here, in the first place from the numerous Defender owners who have all their other rear lights LED already. The standard center stop lamp sticks out there as a sore.....

Am I missing the point here? Apologies if I am. Bow down

If Landyglass already do them tinted they probably do them standard as well with an LED but don't advertise as there's not much demand since Land Rover changed the orientation of the heater element to prevent chafing. Would you pay £170-£190 just to get a rear brake light in LED and have to change the glass at the same time? No? Me neither!

I would just remove the incandescent existing light and find something suitable to replace it with without swapping the glass.

Or...fit an LED bulb perhaps?

Mal, don't think you are missing anything. I have in my SVX very strong 65W halogen aux high beam lamps which give a great output, but if there would be a first class LED replacement for those, so that the aux high beam lamps would become LED like the Speaker EVOs, me and many others would most likely seriously consider to pay the undoubtedly stiff price for those LED lamps.
Same analogy with the rear brake lamp, all my rear lamps are LED, the center brake lamp is not and the light output of the standard lamp is like a candle compared with the 2 LED SVX stop lamps, so I might indeed pay that money to have a well designed rear door glass with integrated first class E marked LED stop lamp.... Just replacing the existing filament stop lamp unit by a not perfectly integrated LED lamp would not really be of interest.

Evening Eric... Thumbs Up

My three top bars on my heater are fooked but it doesn't worry me as with the tint I have on my glass I can't see bu993r all out of my rear window anyway. Suffering from mild OCD there are two reasons I would pay the money for a Landyglass one....

1. I know my three top elements are knackered.

2. Whilst it looks perfect my rear window isn't Landyglass and unlike the former which is tinted glass mine is filmed and yes it does play on my mind.

I will get it swapped out and for an extra £20 I will opt for the natty LED light too. Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Having a 2009 model, mine also came with the old style rear window. 2 times the top three elements stopped working, and dealer replaced the rear window under warranty.... They broke down a 3rd time, and then under extended warranty, the window was finally replaced by the new design. That is two years ago now, and it still works Thumbs Up
But if a real first class rear window panel with a first class well integrated LED brake lamp would exist one day, mmmmmhhhhhh, I might be interested. Laughing

Hi all
You can already buy a standard green heated rear with no brake light..it is the van version, the wiring is already in the door for the brake light on pumas, but not used.
So you could just buy an led brake light like we at landyglass use which resolves the question.the led light used is by hella and retail cost including vat are £46.

Feel free to contact dave anytime
