Models LD - Defender Title P1169 and or P0089 codes logged. Last Modified 30-JUL-2008 10:16 Category Driveability Symptom 608000 Runs Rough Content Issue: 07MY onwards - Difficult to start, missfire, lack of power, driveability issues etc. PCM can have either P1169 and or P0089 logged codes. Pre assured Vin# Def 90 at Vin LD8A760582. Defender 110/130 at Vin# LD8A760304. Cause: Potential contamination in the fuel system. Action: Remove the fuel filter, drain complete contents into a suitable clear vessel. Note signs of any water contamination / debris. 1) If more than 40cc of water or debris is evident carry out the following:- Drain the fuel tank. Check the fuel tank breather location and reposition as per the illustration A attached. On pick up variants please reposition the breather pipe in board towards the rear of the fuel tank. If breather is blocked replace the pipe as per GTR. Replace the fuel filter and clean out the fuel lines of any contamination / debris and or residue. For P1169 code replace the FMV (Fuel Metering Valve), as per GTR and LTB00153. Illustration B. If DTC P0089 is also present replace the PRV (Pressure Relief Valve), as per GTR. Illustration C. Bleed and prime the fuel system as per GTR. Start the vehicle and carry out the pump learn process with IDS as per GTR. Carry out a road test to ensure the issue has been rectified and no codes have been logged. Submit any findings on ePQR to engineering. 2) If no sign of water or debris but either codes logged carry out the following:- Check the integrity of the wiring and the condition of the terminal connections between PCM and Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and between PCM and FMV. Repair wiring as necessary and re test the vehicle. If no issue is found with the wiring / connections, and code P1169 logged, replace the FMV as per GTR and LTB00153. Replace the fuel rail PRV (Pressure Relief Valve), only If DTC P0089 is present as per GTR. Start the vehicle and carry out the pump learn process with IDS as per GTR. Carry out a road test to ensure the issue has been rectified and no codes have been logged. Submit any findings on ePQR to engineering. Note:- A new tank / breather design was introduced on Defender 90 Vin# LD8A760582. and Defender 110/130 at Vin# LD8A760304. Please submit an ePQR for any issue seen on vehicles post these vins. Drain the water from the filter into a clear container Then re drain every 500 miles or so until the water has gone.

The filter is located in the front of the rear OS wheel arch.
Unclip and swing the metal cover out of the way Clean the bottom of the filter Place a clear container underneath the filter Unscrew the plastic bung in the bottom of the filter a few turns, stop un screwing when the fluid starts to run out Let about 3/4 of a pint run out of the filter. Tighten the plastic bung. Replace the metal cover. Start the engine. Or take it to your dealer. |

Is there a LR reference nr for this problem? Or is it just Nr.6? My Defender has been to the dealer's several times for this problem but they can't get it solved. Maybe I should point them to this document but I'm not sure they'll understand it, I don't know if LR translates these docs for dealers in other countries. Hans http://www.orlaya.fr |

Has anyone had the dealer insisting they pay to have this sorted, my 2007 (Sept) 110 has water in the fuel but the dealer (James Edwards Chester) say it must be my fault the is water in the fuel.

Try lroau forum there was a poster called dullbird who had the same thing and the engine was stuffed, they tried to say was their fault and not Lrs but there was a problem with the tank breather facing forward and sucking water etc the site is down at present but I will try the link for you tomorrow YOU SHOULDNOT be paying!!!! |

People have various ways of addressing this issue. One of the first things I did when I bought the Puma in June 2008 was to add some more piping and run it up to the bulkhead behind the break servo. I used the fuel line from a Discovery. I snipped it off where it left the fuel tank and where it entered the fuel filter. The Discovery was stripped and lying in the dealers yard. To join the fuel line to the breather on the Puma I used about six inches of rubber tubing. The extended pipe runs along the chassis and is held in place by cable ties, and vents out at the break servo. If you go to Halfords and show them what you want to do they will supply you with all you need for a modest price. It is a simple diy job. I had thought of adding a glass sedimeter bowl from a series 111 inline just after the filter on the chassis, but I do not know how Land Rover will treat this warranty wise. With the sedimeter bowl a visual inspection would suffice. Since extending my breather I get no excess water when I drain the filter. If this is not clear I will post a photo if anyone wants it. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Follow up phone call from dealer today they had apparently done a modification to the fuel tank breather previously but not claimed from Land Rover so it must be my fault.
I always ask what has been done to my vehicle when I get it back and this has never been mentioned. Land Rover customer services say it hadn't been done but now agree with the dealer -surprise surprise. Basically wonderful customer service from the dealer. |

have they done it? when ask for the paperwork of exact date/ tell them you had problems before that, they are lying to you,with the breather as they modifeid it they knew there wasa problem so therefore admitting a degree of liabilty and you may have already got the water in before this alleged fixing!!! do you anyone from a big TV station nothing like a bit of pubilicty!!! |

OS = Off Side. On a UK right hand drive vehicle it is the drivers side.
Looking from the back of the vehicle the term off side (OS) refers to the right hand side and near side the left hand side - for UK vehicles. Looking from the back of the vehicle the cover is located in the rear wheel arch on the right hand side in front of the wheel - it is quite large and has one quick release catch. I am guessing that this is the same location for LH drive vehicle. Bob |

Ah, thanks Bob, i see it now. I was looking for a "plate" but it's more like a "housing"... Not exactly a fool proof clip is it?!
I'll drain it this afternoon and see what happens... |
