There's not too much else in what you might consider to be a modern tyre available that will fit on the standard steel rim. 90's used to at one time be supplied with 205/16's but these look awfully small these days - ridiculously so on a 110. I think you can still get Avon Rangemasters as 7.50's, which are hard wearing. Not brilliant in the wet though, compared to more modern tyres.
The 'standard' metric size is 235/85 and these are really too wide to fit on the standard 5.5 inch steel rim. They do fit on the 6.5 inch heavy duty (or Wolf) rim though and look very purposeful. Thank you for the replies. I had the same problem with mt old Series Land Rover with LWB wheels for tubed tyres. Seems as though the heavy duty wheels are the way to go then. Does anyone happen to have a photo of a 7.5x16 tyre next to a 235/85? Do they look about the same or are the 7.5 tyres clearly more narrow? Any effect on ground clearance?
Cheers. |

On paper, there's only a few mm difference in diameter and to all intents and purposes they are treated as being the same - hence the Land Rover options. In practice however, not all tyres are created equal and some makes and tread patterns can work out to be a lot bigger than others. Subject to this though, ground clearance should be about the same.
The tread width of a 7.50 works out to be around 200mm in metric so they are narrower - a distinct advantage in some situations! Excellent, thanks for that. I think I will go for the heavy duty wheels then as it leaves the option open for fitting either 7.5x16 or 235/85 tyres. The tyres available for the basic steel wheels seem to by very limited these days.

HD (Wolf wheels) are the way ahead for tyre choice (up to 255) and look great on a Defender.

Here you can see the 7.50 Michelin latitude cross on the back wheel and the BF Goodrich 235.85/16 on the front wolf wheel...
Click image to enlarge Not very happy with the behaviour of these BF tyres on mud though... Won't be on my list next time I have to get new tyres! Excellent, thank you for the photos, helps to see them. I will go for the heavy duty wheel option, makes sense regarding the better choice of tyres.
Just out of interest, if you specify this option when ordering a new vehicle, do they use longer studs? If you ordered the vehicle with standard steel wheels, do you need to change the studs prior to fitting the heavy duty steel wheels, or alloys for that matter? |

^^^ No, no and no, in that order!
No need for longer studs when fitting XD rims. |

But the existing studs are short!
There's some space left on the nut...the stud doesn't reach the top of the nut when tightened!
