In a defender you really won't notice any difference, but for motors more into spl competitions the supposed more developed compounds work better. It's like saying why use Pirelli tyre instead of hankook. I'd always thought that during a decent summer the smell from the flash band would be overpowering.

The Evostick one has no real smell even when heated. This surprised me also

you're paying for the name.
I use Silent Coat as it is the same stuff, but a lot cheaper. No reason not to use flashband I guess, I just find SC easier to apply. |

If you use flashing it's best to use butyl flashing as it stays flexible and not bitumen flashing which doesn't. It worked great on the roof of my 110.

Yes I bought some from B & Q at 50% off don't use the Evostick one though as thats Bitumen.
I also got some from Screwfix although it's not as thick but still works on door skins etc. http://www.screwfix.com/p/sika-multiseal-b...-10m/94203 |

also i think its a wast of time and money dynamatting/flashing/silentcoating 100% of the car. always remember in my boy racer cosworth days many moons ago we used to only dynamat parts of the panels!!
reading up on it now, it seems nothing has changed. im gonna use silent coat bulk pack cut into 10" squares and placed around panels http://www.deadening.co.uk/products/silent-coat-2mm-deadening-mat then mass loaded vinyl then closed cell foam this is an all in one http://www.deadening.co.uk/products/dodo-pro-barrier-mlv than in the roof space and utility panels this sound absorber http://www.carinsulation.co.uk/product/adh...insulation hopefully this will do the trick. Dynamat and other similar products don't stop noise! They stop vibration, so if you have large areas of panels with no strengthening ribs it will vibrate/resonate with road noise, wind passing over panels etc... You will notice a difference by putting squares of sound deadening in the centre of these flat panels but I prefer overkill and chose to seal any gaps then completely cover with dynamat (or similar) then cover with closed cell foam to absorb road noise and insulate slightly then rubber matting, to again absorb more noise. But this may be seen as overkill in a defender

Any idea how much it'd cost to do 'full' dynamat for a defender 90 station wagon?

Hi, I have just Silent Coated the load area of my 110 and then stuck on the 6mm foam stuff they also sell.
I used 6 sheets of silent coat over the main floor area (working on the 50% or more coverage rule) and completely covered the wheel box sides and tops. A good long motorway trip yesterday proved the noise from the load area is definitely reduced, I am now waiting for my acoustic mat to finish the job and then work at reducing the noise from the lump in the front ! I will be using silent coat and the foam on the floors / bulkheads (as far as I can get without removing loads of stuff) and silent coat for inside the doors and under the bonnet. All up it will probably cost £250 to do the whole job Sorry the £250 is without the cost of the Exmoor Acoustic mat and rubber front floor mats...... Last edited by Marky Boy on 29th Jan 2014 1:21pm.
