Sadly my rear cross-member didn't receive the same amount of paint as K9's. The Welsh climate has not been kind to mine, and despite the regular application of ACF50 mine is covered in rust. PAINT IT NOW!!! Peter

If I was buying a Brand New LR I think I would do this.

Drive to straight to a undercover workshop

Take it to pieces

Put it back together properly Whistle

Mr Flips - how long did it take to start showing the rust?

Will another coat of paint when new sort this problem out?

I'd say it was around four years when the rust began to become noticeable, and now approaching six is still only light, but probably about the latest to catch it before it can be rubbed down and repainted (in order that it would look new again).

I'm only now starting to look into painting it, so others will offer better advice to me on how to do that. Thumbs Up Peter

My rear cross member was just a dull black after a few years, but there was no rust yet at all. Mind that from new all bolts on the entire truck have been replaced with SS from Stig Fasteners (an alternative to which could be Nakatanenga of course).
At less than 3 years my truck went into my dealer for installing my Alive DRL bumper, and to my surprise I got it back with a rear cross member sprayed in satin black... Without me having asked them to do that..... Their body shop had done that on their own initiative in order to make sure that no rust would appear in the future... Was not charged for that....
Looks picture perfect still now after 5 1/2 years. Plenty of pics in my gallery.
So get your cross member satin black sprayed from new, and Dinitrolled from the inside and you should be ok for long time to come. Thumbs Up You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

must do jobs on a brand new defender ... (make sure its been built properly)

here's my list ...

1. before you leave the showroom

make sure all panels, doors bonnet fit correctly
check the rear cappings, they should be flush with the wings.
check all the rivets are there.
jump underneath, have a look for any leaks.
check the oil
lift the front carpets, check for moisture
lift the middle row carpet - check again
lift the boot space carpet - check again
make sure you have the radio code written somewhere on the documentation
wiggle the turbo hose ... some have been known to be loose.

2. when you get home

jump underneath again, look for anything loose or hanging down that does not look right
if poss. check the gearbox, xfer box and axle oil levels
check your prop-shafts have grease nipples (some don't)
check the axle breathers and fuel pipe breather are located correctly.
if you have an XS, check heated front and rear screens work correctly (rear screens have been known to have issues adjacent to the rear brake light)
test the alarm and ultrasonic sensor

3. before bolting loads of goodies on, have think about security and rust proofing

4. enjoy your truck !

Heated rear screen top heating elements not working was a very common problem until about 2010 I believe. For some with a pre 2010 Puma 2.4 who might still suffer from this problem, read my last post in below thread. Worth a reminder as since the new screen has become common this issue has not been commented much anymore. So much the better of course, but worth a little refreshing. Thumbs Up
