Patience ! Not one of my best points but then the Flying Scotsman didn't break the speed records in 1934 by employing Patience ... Anyway you reckon 60 is too fast ? Ok let me work this out
The 110 is almost 3tonne and I have proven that no differance is achieved in mileage with having the roof rack on or off
To achieve the best mpg lets say at a constant 50 you'd have to travel all the way down the motorway in the dead of night for hours on end in the highest gear without any traffic .
Impossible in the daytime but just as difficult in the dead of night as I do it a lot . Even at night the wagons are at a minimum speed of 55 most of them now closer to 60 so to sit At 50 in defender just doesn't work with them up your tail or right in front of you , their gonna be seriously P'd off with you toodling along at 50 .
Even getting the chance to sit at 50 for hours ..... Well it's pretty hard to do knowing that your about to add 2 hrs onto your journey time ( the Patience word rings in my ear again ) anyway that's all in ideal circumstances what about every day driving ? It's not possible . I got better fuel economy from my S11a 2.25 petrol .
My max mileage to the first gauge mark ( 3quarters ) is 120 . I'm BAMBOOSELED Shocked Shocked

I'll even better his score to 530 something. The only thing is that in my case it's kilometers, not miles... Rolling Eyes
Anyways, I gave up. I just drive. When not in a hurry I cruise around 90-100 km/h, 130 km/h when I have less time.
I decided if I was to save money on fuel I bought the wrong car to start with...

Keith is it possible something isn't working quite right if you're struggling to get good mpg even when you try? Check out page 7 where Glyn got circa 500 miles and believes more is possible even with his mud tyres?

I still believe mine some kind of intermittent fuel starvation and this may be a contributing factor - I'm not sure but the numbers I've posted are what they are.

Mate, for someone as obsessed with fuel consumption as your good self, I would have expected those MPG figures to trip off the tongue Wink

It would seem that you have a very efficient Defender! No rush for the figures, I was just curious.

finished the VAT ....quick coffee and a couple of posts......

64.54 ltrs - 420 miles
65.52 ltrs - 448 miles
66.18 ltrs - 431 miles
60.34 ltrs - 415 miles
69.21 ltrs - 501 miles
63.25 ltrs - 455 miles
66.40 ltrs - 32638 mileage
68.44 ltrs + 9ltrs jerry can - 602 miles
70.05 ltrs - 526 miles
69.87 ltrs - 509 miles
69.05 ltrs - 458 miles
70.70 ltrs - 464 miles
69.36 ltrs - 565 miles
67.80 ltrs - 438 miles
70.45 ltrs - 523 miles
71.05 ltrs - 430 miles
70.80 ltrs - 490 miles

will shove into a spreadsheet and see how the numbers look

so if my maths are right thats an average of 31.8mpg

I'd my driving is mixed (well always slow) but 50 / 50 . 8 miles commute each way to work and other days c200 mile round trips mostly motorways.

32.28 is your average overall. Your best was 37.06 mpg and your worst was 27.53 mpg. i messed out this one 66.40 ltrs - 32638 mileage as it meant nothing

I'm chocking on my bacon roll whilst reading these figures . 526 - 70L ......in a 3t 110 def . Unbelievable . I also have done the long trips at 55 in both td5 and 2.2 and as mentioned 420 in td5 MAX and 350 MAX in 2.2 .
I can't wait to the first big forum get together when there's gonna be some hearty chit - chat .
All the chat yrs ago on our series cars was how to get better fuel economy and the big one was to fit free wheelin hubs and a kenlow fan , taller tyres and an overdrive . Why don't anyone fit FWH to our new def's ?
If I told you I got 28mpg from my 2,25 petrol would you believe that ?

Hey, I built her from the ground up and it never let me down Whistle Just looked at my post and I suppose I should add the decimal point in between the 8 and the 5!
