Yeah - and I recently found out my bloody alarm isn't battery-backed-up
I just assumed that on a 2011 model... I have a compact 12v battery-backup circuit but I don't know where I should stick it (about to start a new thread) Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

While I accept this is true, the weak point is the steering wheel. As someone has previously mentioned the steering wheel is mostly rubber with a thin steel band in it. Peeling the lock off the wheel is relatively easy because of this as the wheel is quite flexible. I do feel that Disklok understand this risk and could modify their device to prevent this from happening. The modification to the rear of the lock, as shown here wouldn't be to much of a stretch for them. The hinge is quite vulnerable too, as show in the same thread. I should also add that the lock could be improved by providing some sort of cable anchor to secure the lock to the vehicle. Sadly the arm of the lock isn't long enough to stop the lock from turning past the windscreen in most d'fenders. |

Right:
Pop your bonnet as your facing the car look at the loom down the right hand side. Think it's the same for left hookers also but not 100% sure but either way it'll be behind the headlights. You're looking for this connector The small one is the crappy standard alarm and the big one with the rubber plug is the BBUS. Then go to to ebay and search for "Range Rover p38 Alarm" e.g. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/108-P38-RANGE-RO...1071286475 Or buy a new one from LR for £60-70 Then trace the loom back to the bulkhead. It pops out to a multi plug attached to the heater matrix. Then make up a new extended loom The Alarm is plug and play Locate it somewhere that is not standard and would be a to get to, even to cut the wires. Hide the wires, conduit, tape cover in mud for authentic look. There you go |

Or put the clutch in, if there's no pedal lock fitted. |

Possibly, but as part of a strategy to slow the down, it's another thing to overcome. Plus it'd be a sod to drive with the stub that'd be left.

@ZeDefender
I'm not sure you'll find that element of the loom that Tiger mentions as I seem to recall from a previous thread on here, that pre MY2012 PUMAs were not fitted with these straight out of the factory. From what I can work out, bearing in mind I don't own a Puma, pre MY2012 pumas run a dedicated 12V sounder, separate to the horn(s). If you wanted a LR factory set up BBUS, you may find you need to replace the whole wing loom to allow for a BBUS instead. MY2012 and beyond Pumas, I'm told, have a BBUS as standard. Maybe stick to your original plan ? Wouldn't personally bother with an ebay special P38 or D1 BBUS simply as there's a chance the NiMh battery is fecked and won't hold any charge or very much of one... completely defeating the point. Mind you, if cheap enough, it might be worth a punt to test before shelling out for a new one I guess. I can't say that all Td5s are wired as per Tigers and mine but the 2002-on wiring diagrams suggest they should be. If a BBUS wasn't specced from new, the Td5 alarm sounder is the horn(wired for two, most only have one in situ), rather than having a separate alarm sounder as per the PUMA. However, the Td5s appear (maybe not all???) to have the BBUS and the non battery backed up alarm sounder wiring included in the loom. As an aside, not that I can claim a defined trend yet given we're only one month in... but 25% of the reported thefts on LandyWatch so far this year have been Pumas. Less than 10% in previous years [Added on edit.... Limited 2013 information provided by victims of theft on LandyWatch suggested that a Disklok had a 60% success rate at helping to prevent a theft compared to 12.5% of 'other steering wheel locks. To quote a post from one of their mods when I put this data up on LandyZone....
It's a pretty good summary of the core protection that seems to make a difference..... then you can get stupid about it if you want.... (ahem) Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless. |

Without me delving into the wiring on my 2002my 110 station wagon, could I assume that mine has a bbs as when the alarm is triggered there is a definate sound of a siren as well as the horn and the indicators flashing. Get's a little embarrasing at 5am when I used to start off to work

Take the earth lead off the battery
If it makes a loud noise then you have a BBUS I'd still move it though from factory standard placement |

.....and if it doesn't you perhaps have a BBUS with a fecked battery. Distinctly possible on a twelve year old vehicle.
I guess it could be a non BBUS siren but that seems less likely. Would say that, sadly, the best way to be sure is go ferreting around the ns headlamp void to see if you can find something that looks like...(not a great pic, sorry). Agree with Tiger, definitely worth relocating it to somewhere where at least it's in a zone that is protected by the alarm. [Added on edit] - It's also worth mentioning that these sounders can still be silenced in both crude and more sophisticated ways. Relocating them helps against the cruder form of attack. What has been posted above is correct.
The only sure way to tell if you have a BBUS is either to look, or better still disconnect the battery. Some vehicles have a non-battery-backed alarm sounder in addition to the horns so merely listening isn't enough. TD5s seem all to have the BBUS-compatible wing harness whether or not they are fitted with BBUS. Pumas only have the harness if factory-fitted with BBUS. The part no for the harness is YMB1023700 and Ebay user "hobsonind" currently has some available new for £44 +£4 pp which is a bargain. |

I knew I shouldn't have put my winch solonoid pack, spotlight relays, fuel tank for the Eberspacher etc in that bit of space! I'll try to remember to look when I get round to putting some crystal headlamps on later in the year.
