Seems a bit an off-spring of the grumpy old man thread here. Rolling Eyes Laughing
Now, fully agree with the remarks about rear fog lights. People should be more attentive when to turn those on and off again as soon as not necessary. I just guess that the average driver cannot make a proper judgment as to what 100m distance is approximately. Laughing
As to the use of front fogs. Well, the real problem is that 90% of the front fogs, whether original vehicle equipment or after market installation are either of not very good quality, or are not properly aimed the way they should be, or both. And in those cases they indeed will dazzle oncoming trafic.
But if you have first class quality front fogs which also are properly aimed, they will not dazzle anybody, and they will actually be less of a nuisance than many cars headlights.
My Hellas are properly installed and levelled, and I have tested this numerous times, they do not cause any hindrance to oncoming traffic, they just give a perfect many meters wide additional light coverage just sideways in front of the car.
If that would be the standard, front fogs would just be a welcome additional frontal light.
Mind you, I rarely use mine as the Speakers do all what is needed and then some. Only rarely on very narrow twisted roads here, in the mountains and other, I will use them additionally to the Speakers.

I think that rear fog light bulbs should be location sensitive, only working when within 10 meters of an MOT station Mr. Green 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

The Highway Code only suggests you don't need them, like so many other actual punishable offences.
It's about time the Highway Code stated the actual penalties for not obeying it.

Has anyone ever heared of someone being pulled for unnecessary use of rear foglights?
The police ought to take a firmer hand.

When I was young and I was pulled for using front fogs when not required. I was fined £40 I think it was, no points. It was worth it though, anything to make my dad's Volvo look 'cool' .

My grump is no lights in the fog. Many cars with auto head lights are confused by fog as it's actually quite bright, so the auto lights don't come on. I ride my motorbike everyday and this morning thick fog was no exception. The ones that stick in my mind on the M40 this morning were; a defender 90 with no lights other than DRLs and a new shape Range Rover. There were others but they stuck in my head obviously. No lights at the rear is far from ideal when traffic starts queuing up. Strong people are harder to kill and generally more useful!

If we're rewriting the book then can i suggest a rule,

"if when driving around a well lit and busy town centre,at dusk or dawn, then if you are seen to be using the rear fog light and I am directly behind you with a glowing red face. I am permitted to then test the strain of my beautifal steel girder style front bumper on your rear window. "

Another would be:

"if when driving and for no reason at all! (as there really is no reason for it) you have your front fog lamps on... Any normal sensible driver is permitted to carry a basebal bat and follow you to your destination. Then when you have parked it is then the duty of this good citizen to smash your fog lamps. If you protest then the citizen is permitted to bonk you on the head and point an angry finger in your face and firmly say "no!"

I hate the fog light using tits!

Its nice to vent lol

Let me have a try at this. Here's one :

Where someone drives so aggressively; in either changing lane or overtaking, that were it not for your own dramatic changes to speed or road position to accommodate them a collision would be unavoidable - then in these circumstances, when driving a defender, it will be excusable in the eyes of law to ram them.

A little like the situation I found my self in this evening. Earlier today, well at 8:15 this morning, some 72 year old dear decided to drive her Honda CRV into a garden wall on a minor but busy route into Hereford resulting in a steady stream of traffic through our village. I keep our pony at a local livery yard the other side of this road and travel the lanes that cross the main road. The accident happened between my usual crossing point and another junction only half a mile further on.
This evening trundling off to do the pony I soon realised by the volume of traffic I met, sometimes see 2 cars not 22, that the road was still closed. As I got to the crossroads there was complete chaos, there was a poor artic driver that had approached the road closed signs, no warning beforehand and the local radio was extremely vague on the location. He had taken a left at the crossroads, same direction I wanted to go, perfectly good enough lane for an artic, a little narrow but driveable, but as he turned in he was met by a sea of cars coming the other way.
When I got there, cars had driven right up behind him and he was out asking if they could give him some room for him to back out. I shoved all my flashing beacons on and dumped my motor a lorry length from the junction to give him room to come back then got out to watch him back getting more difficult as it was dark.
I found it so incredible on how drivers were trying to get round him as he was reversing, it was a good job he was pretty competantas he had no chance of making a forward shunt as all the cars in front were moving en-masse as he moved. There just doesn't seem to be any understanding of how vehicles move and people have no consideration for other road users. The poor bloke may have pushed his way back by himself but with someone acting as banksman speeded the job up and enabled the driver to do it in some safety. he had no alternative but to go back the way he had come but even then cars had filled both sides of the road approaching the crossroads which had to filter back to one lane so he could continue his journey.
Well I've got to go through it all again in the morning as the road will stay closed tonight and it will be school run time when I have to go that way again Rolling Eyes

I use the front fogs on the jimny because the pattern of the headlamps is crap for back roads. Anyone who feels the need to follow me and take a bat to the lights will have the bat removed from their grasp and inserted with some force into their ear. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Hopefully no-one will know, because as a coutreous driver, you'll switch them off if another car approaches, using them like full beam only Thumbs Up Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

To be honest, I don't think that front fog lights are any brighter than a lot of (especially German) DRLs due to their low beam spread.

I live out in the sticks a bit and when driving the Evoque through the country lanes, I sometimes turn on the fogs as it lights up the verges quite well.

I do however, normally switch them off if something does come the other way. Craig Rogers

Lots of people have front fogs pointing all over, they are a nuisance and illegal to use incorrectly.

Their alignment does not seem to be checked at MOT which is another issue....many older cars (like an old Saab I passed on the M6 last night) have them on, pointing at the sky...very annoying.

Round us the Police stop people incorrectly using fog lights as a reason to breathalyse them Thumbs Up

Personally I wish the police would enforce the rule, and maybe even use camera detectors to issue fixed penalties as well as the usual stop-at-the-side-of-the-road process.

The vast magority (as per the OP) hate them, and consider improper use of them as an inconsiderate and foolish act. Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Rolling with laughter I was the OP! Thumbs Up

That was rear ones I was annoyed at, but you are correct. They shouldn't be used unless you have a good reason to. No problem to incorrectly use them when it's not going to annoy, such as my use.

How many people on here run illegal spot lights..... Whistle

I does annoy me when spotty kids in their supercar converted pathetic cars have their fogs on.

However, it doesn't annoy me as much as converted HID el cheapo Chinese special lights that just seem to light up the area around my eyes and very little else.

Fog lights are great for off-road/greenlane use though as they light the floor directly in front of the wheels. Found that out the other day when I took the Evoque down a track that I soon wish I hadn't! Craig Rogers
