Spare wheel mount on 110 double cab
Have been trying to find a new home for the spare wheel to avoid using up all that space in the load area. Guess a bonnet mount is out of the question for a Puma - the bonnet's so high it would probably be hard to see around it.

Have looked at some of the rear swing-away wheel carriers but haven't seen one pictured on a drop-down tailgate. Has anyone done this, or do you think I'd need to swap to a side hinged tailgate for one of these carriers to really work?

Here's mine ,side swinging, not seen one fixed direct to tail gate that drops down if that's what your thinking, might make it very heavy! This was from safari equip via Brendan

Never seen these before, and it looks precisely like what I'm after. Strange they don't have prices on the site though. What did you pay, and what's the quality like? If you don't mind me asking!

Hi Sparky, that looks good Thumbs Up If I remember correctly that was a 'special' one as we got the wheel carrier modified so that the spare wheel was central??


Safari Equip are a manufacturing company who mainly deal with the trade all though they also sell retail as well.

Their factory is 2 miles away from where we live so we have a slight advantage as we can readily call in at the factory and arrange things directly with them. To quote their bosses they are an engineering concern not an IT concern!


Standard swing away wheel carriers move the spare wheel slightly offcentre.

For a pickup Defender the only swingaway wheel carrier readily available to my knowledge is the Safari Equip one.

These wheel carriers are available in three different finishes:

1) Standard powder coated

2) Hot dip galvanised

3) Hot dip galv and powder coated

They can be made with or without a high lift mounting plate.

Standard position off wheel (offset) or more central

Now that makes 12 versions of one type of wheel carrier!



OK not available on our website yet but they start from about £175 including VAT


Carriage to someplace on planet earth varies depending on exact location as they are not a lightweight item. Razz

Haha good point about my location - have put something more sensible in my profile now... Read too much Douglas Adams as a child I guess.

Thanks guys, sounds like this central wheel galv+powder coat is just the ticket. Also looking for a suitable hard pickup cover now (one that won't increase the height of the vehicle) and want to make sure it'll all fit together. Brendan I'll contact you directly when I've decided exactly what I'm doing.

Ginez - I'm liking your solution as the best. Keeping the wheel inside saves hassle when using with a tailgate, places the weight more centrally and keeps the wheel nice and clean.

I did think it would limit using what is already limited space inside the rear tub of a DC but after loading the vehicle up for Xmas I was surprised what you could actually get in with the use of stacking boxes and i little thought.

Would be good to see a kit available on the market rather than have to go bespoke for it though.

After running around with no spare for quite a while, I have finally got around to sorting this out. The original mount to the rear of the tub was redundant after fitting a full length drawer unit.

I had planned on using the cargo tracking I had fitted to both top sides of the rear tub:

but it was working out what was the best fitting. I found a pair of Unwin wheelchair anchors on ebay that attach to multiple holes and contain a double universal joint:

so with a rubber mount on one of the stud holes it ratchets up nice and tight:

and leaves the majority of the loadbed free:

final touch was an old rubber boot on the end of the arm:

Will make removal when needed a very simple task and the arm can be stowed away when the full load bed area is needed.

I plan to mount it to the roof rack when rear tub is fully loaded and am looking to utilise a rear door spare wheel carrier for securing it. I'll post separately on another thread when I get that done.
