Ifor Wiliams Alloys
Whilst having a look through their parts catalog I couldn't help but notice their alloys for trailers.
Thinking of getting a P6 / P8 ideally at some point and an tempted over the regular steels option.
Just wondering if anyone has any or any photos?
Just mentioning it now and looking for views as if I do buy it'll be a new order so I could get what I want specially to order and avoid any buying wheels and selling them on and swapping and so on which will cost a lot more...
I'm also tending o think the mesh side kit would be best for me and the P8 because I have a post 1997 licence and shouldn't be so lively to reverse as a smaller trailer.

Thoughts and any photos much appreciated (any ifor trailer if you like.)

Thumbs Up

I have a p6 with mess sides. It's a fantastic trailer. Easy to reverse and for such a small trailer tows really well.

We have three Ifor William trailers and they are great trailers.

If you are seriously thinking of getting a trailer seriously consider talking your trailer test. Well worth getting that legal entitlement as it will certainly save you hassle later on..

Alloy wheels on a trailer? Put the money towards a trailer test would be my advice.

Brendan - Makes sense what your saying but I can't see me needing to tow anything heavier for the foreseeable future.
Having said that it would be a good qualification as there isn't too many young people out there with it.

Steve, fit a tow bar then chances are that sooner or later someone will ask you to tow something bigger.

Now towing law gets confusing.

Locally one post 97 driver was towing a large boat trailer on M 62.

Escorted by police into services and got done for

No trailer entitlement
Driving on motorway without P plate and no supervising driver
No insurance as he was driving without a valid driving licence for vehicle combination he was driving.

Left trailer uncoupled at service station/ longer then 2 hours and got charged by service station.

Points on licence means extra insurance premium.

Please note a supervising driver these days has had to pass the relevant driving test for a minimum of 2 years. We have pre 97 licences and can legally tow, however we can not supervise a post 97 driver as we have not passed the towing test.

The trailer test doesn't just make towing heavier things 'legal', but also improves all round towing ability/awareness (regardless of weights and sizes!)! I must do mine .... It's on the to do list.... An engine to TDi for!

I did my trailer test after passing car test post 97. You are only legally allowed to tow 750kilos without the b+e. Ive recently done my class 2 rigid and doing class 1 artic now.

Regarding alloys. Personally i wouldnt as if you curb the trailer you can hammer steel ones back, alloys... You'd be lucky.

We've ifor williams tipper, horsebox, and 20ft flatbed.

Going back to the original post, somewhere I have seen a photo of an Ifor 5 stud wheel on the front of a Defender, if so can you put defender wheels on a 5 stud Ifor axle??

Next question! Can you swap 4 stud hubs on a smaller 8x4 1 tonne Ifor for 5 stud versions??

Cheers Keith

Sorry my mistake!

Supervising driver should be at least 21 and have passed the relevant test by THREE YEARS not two years as I thought.

Quote:

In order to supervise a learner driver you must,

be at least 21 years old and
have held a full EC licence for the appropriate category of vehicle for at least 3 years.

Failure to comply with these requirements could mean a maximum fine of £1,000, discretionary disqualification or 3-6 penalty points (the learner driver could also face the same penalties).

Red L (L or D plates in Wales) must be affixed to the front and rear of the car and must be clearly visible.

Have actually found the relevant act of parliament before now.

That quote can be found on askthe.police.uk

or there is a different version

Quote:

Anyone, particularly in the training industry, who currently relies on implied entitlements and wants to continue to act as an accompanying driver after the change is introduced will need to pass the relevant driving test(s) before 6 April 2010. The DVLA will ensure that such people are already considered to meet the requirement relating to the length of time that the full licence must have been held – usually three years – from the date of the change.

If they pass the relevant driving test(s) and meet the appropriate medical standards after the 6 April 2010, they will have to wait until they have held their new entitlement for three years before they can act as the supervising driver.

If you hold a pre 97 licence you are not legally allowed to supervise a post 97 driver with a trailer unless

you have passed the trailer test for a minimum of 3 years

I incorrectly stated 2 years.

You can not supervise a learner trailer driver on 'grandfather' rights.

OK think of the logic about it. Yes I know the law and logic Razz

Would you really want someone who passed their test pre 97 in a car, who has never towed a trailer themselves, never received any training in towing, never passed their trailer test actually supervising a learner towing driver??

Yes you can supervise a learner on grandfather rights without sitting the test .

B+E was not included in the 2010 changes , that's for c1 and D1.

You can supervise on grandfather rights, but I agree you wouldn't really want someone that's never towed supervising but it's perfectly legal.
