Hand brake problems
I have just put my handbrake back together after replacing the rear output seal. I have put on new shoes and all seemed well. However, in reverse, they bind.

I have done an extensive search on this but the reason I have created a new post is because I feel my problem is a little different.

When I bought the car 18 months ago she had done 62000 miles and immediately needed the rear output flange seal doing. I replaced everything to do with the output shaft including the flange itself.

9000 miles later the handbrake started to very lightly bind in reverse. I looked underneath and noticed a drip of oil on the drum. I presumed it was the oil making it stick as it was only light and never locked solid. So this weekend I bit the bullet and did the job again, but this time replacing the handbrake shoes as well due to them being so contaminated.

Now it binds a lot worse but still not enough to jam up and it does release if I drive backwards far enough. It does not bind forwards. Here is the bit that has me baffled. If I physically push the car backwards the brake doesn't bind at all!


Can anyone point me in the right direction? Any help would be much appreciated. I don't want to put words in to people's mouths but I am thinking excessive movement in the main transfer box shaft.

Another thought, would a sticking cable throw up symptoms like this?

A sticking cable is common but can't see it producing the problem difference between driven, or being pushed. That would indicate more, as you say, towards the output flange altering its position.

Ok, so I decided to have a look at my binding handbrake again today in order to chamfer the edges of the shoes a little more.

All sorted but it still binds.......but after a few test rolls I decided the handbrake was not the problem. If the gearbox is in reverse and I roll the car with the clutch pressed it binds. However, if I take it out of gear it rolls freely.

When I put the transfer box in low range the binding is a lot worse, to the point you have to drive the vehicle in order to move it down the slope.

It is an interval bind if that makes sense....bind...release...bind...release...etc...and all this ONLY when rolling backwards. There are no problems going forwards at all.


On top of all this the gearbox chatters under load in 4th gear quite badly. When I put some weight on the gear stick with my hand, it stops. Recently, it has started to do this slightly in 3rd as well.



This is obviously a gear/transfer box fault but can anyone help me narrow my search down a little? I have also got some fancy dan manual gearbox oil in that is very thin...I wonder if I should replace it with land rover recommended stuff to see whether it eases the situation.

If you suspect a gearbox fault then maybe talk to Ashcroft transmissions, very knowledgable Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon
