td5 defender 1999 running issues
hello got a problem that is weird .starts first turn every time and settles into smooth tickover,if i then drive till the engine is at temp all is fine.issue shows if i only do a couple of miles then stop for an hour or so when i drive away it starts and runs smooth pulls away then within 100yards will not pull engine is smooth but no power ,if you floor the accelerator it takes an age for the revs to build up then at a certain point up the revs it takes off like a scalded cat change gear then wait for the revs to builds.this happens for a few minutes then clears and is fine.i fitted a new maf changed fuel filter and cleaned out pump with no effect any help much appreciated

Couple of easy checks you can do.

Pull the red plug on the ecu and check for oil.

Check the turbo actuator rod to make sure it is not sticking.

Are you getting any blue smoke at all - sounds a bit like a build up of something in the pots and taking a while to clear ?

bit of black smoke when cold and you boot it but when it plays up nothing until the revs build then when it takes off big tube of black smoke until you change gear and the revs drop then as soon as the problem clears no smoke no matter how you drive

Black smoke is normally incomplete combustion in a diesel.

It could be a multitude of things but an easy place to start is the air filter - make sure it is clean and has not got wet. Also may be worth disconnecting the MAF (I know you have fitted a new one but ...) and seeing if the problem goes away. Was it a genuine MAF, aftermarket ones are known to sometimes cause problems.

Then you are looking at things like the fuel pressure regulator, injectors and injector seals.

Also, have a search for a recent post by JWL about the trap/filter on top of the fuel pump.

Think your MAF has failed, unplug the MAF and try.

Sorry, but are you saying that you have already changed the MAF? And you still have the problem? Have you driven with it disconnected?

tryed a pattern maf ran horrible disconnected drove it for a couple of weeks drove better but smoked a bit on acceleration(handy when overtaking cyclists that think they own the road)still had the power loss, fitted genuine maf runs sweet but still has has this odd power loss which never happens once the temp gauge gets above the blue section and not every day,can do exactly the same journey strat stop start and it will only do it every second or third day

Might also be worth taking the MAP sensor out of the inlet manifold and giving it a good clean with contact cleaner.

They do get dirty.

Have you still got the EGR or is it blanked ?

Check that the turbo hose has not delaminated. It doesn't sound 100% to match your symptoms but easy enough to take one end off and feel inside.

This was a problem on our 2000
